    SENT OF GOD

Charles Finney found the old authors in his law books frequently quoting from the Scriptures. This excited his curiosity so much that he purchased a Bible, the first that he had ever owned, and hunted up every passage referred to. This led to careful reading and much meditation upon the Sacred Word. Here follow two facts that are profoundly important to all Churches and Christians, and especially to all who would ever be successful soul-winners. His pastor's name was Rev. George W. Gale, a graduate of Princeton College and Theological Seminary. His theology was hyper-Calvinistic and not yhe genui e Calvinism taught in Princeton at that time. Gale believed that man’s nature was so totally sinful that he was utterly incapable of any good; the will was incapable of a right choice; the soul was utterly passive in regeneration; ''there was no adaptation in the gospel to change his nature, and consequently no connection in religion between means and ends.”

"This Brother Gale sternly held; and consequently, in his preaching, he never seemed to expect, nor did he even aim at converting anybody by any sermon that I ever heard him preach. And yet he was an able preacher, as preaching was then estimated. The fact is, these dogmas were a perfect strait-jacket to him. If he preached repentance, he must be sure, before he sat down, to leave the impression on his people that they could not repent. If he called them to believe, he must be sure to inform them that, until their nature was changed by the Holy Spirit, faith was impossible to them. And so his orthodoxy was a perfect snare to himself and to his hearers." (Memoirs of C. G. Finney, pp. 59, 60.)

The pastor was in the habit of dropping into the
young lawyer’s office to see what impression his sermons had made on the lawyer’s mind. Finney was at this time leader of his choir, and of course their relations were familiar. With the keen, subtle, intellectual acumen which characterized him and a frankness bordering on to impolite bluntness, and probably with a touch of cynical irreverence, the lawyer satisfied the minister’s curiosity completely; for fifty years afterward he wrote: 'I now think that I criticised his sermons unmercifully. . . . Indeed, I found it impossible to attach any meaning to the terms which he used with great formality and frequency. What did he mean by repentance? Was it a mere feeling of sorrow for sin? Was it altogether a passive state of mind, or did it involve a voluntary element? If it was a change of mind, in what sense was it a change of mind? What did he mean by the term 'regeneration?’

What did such language mean when applied to a spiritual change? What did he mean by faith? Was it merely an intellectual state? Was it merely a conviction or persuasion that the things stated in the gospel were true? What did he mean by sanctification? Did it involve any physical change in the subject, or any physical influence on the part of God? I could not tell; neither did he seem to know himself. I sometimes told him that he seemed to begin in the middle of his discourse, and to assume many things which, to my mind, needed to be proved. I must say, I was rather perplexed than edified by his preaching.”
    (Memoirs, pp. 7, 8.)

As one reads such words, one can not help wondering how many ministers now are as vague and misty as was Rev. Gale, and how many multitudes are still sitting in the pews and wondering what the ministers are talking about. Neither can one help reflecting that, with such a theology prevailing, it is little wonder that infidelity was widespread at the beginning of the century, and revivals were few, with seldom a conversion, and that only one in fourteen of the population of this country was even a professor of religion!

Everybody was told that they were absolutely helpless, and could do nothing to secure their own repentance or conversion; and they generally believed it. With one accord they were idly waiting, in imaginary helplessness, for a sovereign God to enable them to repent and believe; and thus whole generations were sweeping into hell. What appalling results can flow from a false theology!

The other striking fact was this: Finney read a great deal in his Bible about prayer and answers to
prayer and prayer promises; and yet he continually heard people pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and as often confess that they did not receive what they asked for. He heard them exhort each other to wake up and be engaged and pray earnestly for a revival of religion, professing that, if they were in earnest, they would have a revival, and the impenitent would be converted; but they would as continually bemoan their coldness and complain that they were making no progress. He says : '"This inconsistency, the fact that they prayed so much and were not answered, was a sad stumbling-block to me.'' ‘'On one occasion, when I was in one of the prayer-meetings, I was asked if I did not desire that they should pray for me. I told them, ‘No,' because I did not see that God answered their prayers. I said: ‘I suppose that I need to be prayed for—for I am conscious that I am a sinner—but I do not see that it will do any good for you to pray for me; for you are continually asking, but do not receive. You have been praying for a revival of religion ever since I have been in Adams [three years], and yet you have it not. You have prayed enough since I have attended these meetings to have prayed the devil out of Adams, if there is any virtue in your prayers. But here you are, praying on and complaining still.' " (Memoirs, p. 10.)

Some young people proposed to pray for Finney, among them the noble young woman who afterward became his wife. But the hopeless pastor remarked that it would do no good; he did not believe that Finney would ever be converted, since he had already sinned against so much light that his heart was hopelessly hardened! And what was the more, the choir was so much under Finney's influence that it was doubtful if they would ever be converted while their leader remained in Adams.

Fortunately for the kingdom of God, some one had more faith than the pastor, and laid hold of God for Finney’s conversion. To use his own words, he became 'Very restless.” A little reflection showed him that he was by no means in a state of mind to go to heaven, if he should die. He began to feel that there was something in religion of infinite importance, and that, if the soul was immortal, he needed a great change to be prepared for happiness in heaven. The great soul was approaching his Bethel: he was standing face to face with God, and confronting the decisive question whether he would accept Christ as presented in the gospel, or pursue a worldly course of life. Prayers were being answered at last; for God had his hook in Finney’s jaw, and was pulling with the mighty cord of Infinite Love.

  • When I first came to the Lord four years ago now. I didn't know what I didn't know I just knew I didn't know much about theology. Let alone all the other ologies that compose it. After minimal investigation of some of the other denominations where I live and searching, and church shopping I became a regular attendee at a Plymouth (Open) Brethren Assembly. The time I've spent there has been educational and beneficial and pleasant. and I do not regret my 4 years there. However over the last year I've had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of theology both of what the Brethren teaches as well as my own and how the early church fathers understood things. This has brought me to a crossroads because the Brethren are 2 point Calvinists in Total Deprivity and Once Saved Always Saved. I reject Calvinism and the early church fathers did not support either these doctrines. So you see my conundrum. My current understanding of theology is reflected in other mainstream denominations notably Orthodoxy and the Wesleyan Church, How do I tell the elders but I may have to leave shortly?

  • "The SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD in SALVATION" (Eph. 1:3-14)
preached by John MacArthur on June 22, 1980.
Such an important TRUTH and the 'dividing line' between Calvinism (Biblical Theology) and Arminianism (HUMAN 'wisdom' characterized BY pride & self-centeredness; and MAN'S 'wisdom' that refers to man’s humanness & frailty that comes from an unsanctified heart & unredeemed spirit generated by demons, who have been made captive to the same evil world's system).
    Excerpt from John's message:
Now, listen carefully. Let me draw this together for you.
When you think about YOUR SALVATION, beloved, there’s only one direction you can go with your thanksgiving, and that’s toward God.
#1 ... He CHOSE us in Christ before the world was made. So, it’s all of His will, it’s all of His purpose. It has nothing to do with us, and it’s all for His glory.
#2 ... He, then, PREDESTINED us through Christ purely on the basis of His love for His own good pleasure, based solely on His will to make us His children for His glory.
#3 ... And then, He GRACED us, which means there was no merit on our part. It wasn’t 99 percent God and 1 percent us. It wasn’t 99.9 percent God and 0.1 percent us. It was all God and none of us.
#4 ... It was FREELY GIVEN, He says. Freely given. And that brings all the praise and all the glory to Him.
#5 ... He REDEEMED us; that is, He provided for and paid the price for our sins, and granted to us freedom from bondage, and sin, and death according to the riches of His unmerited grace, which gives Him all the glory.
#6 ... And then He FORGAVE us. Having paid the price He then freely forgave us all our sins based on nothing which we had done. Again giving Himself all the glory, all the praise.
#7 ... Then He ENLIGHTENED us. He revealed His will to us, which we would otherwise never have known, nor ever been able to discover. All the glory for His self-disclosure then belongs to Him.
#8 ... And then He GAVE us an INHERITANCE: an inheritance which we could not earn, so that all the praise is His. He gave it because He predestined us for it, because He purposed us for it, because He willed it for us, and then He sealed us.
#9 ... He provided SECURITY. If it weren’t for that, we’d default. We’d fail. But He secures us, and so all the praise is His.
So, “What about us? Do we do anything? We just stand around until He does it?”
Notice please, verses 12 and 13, two things are mentioned, and only two, and almost offhandedly.
It says in verse 12 that we were the first to hope in Christ.
And in verse 13 it says after listening to the message of the truth, the gospel of your salvation having also believed.
Hope in Christ, believing the gospel, that’s our part.
Well, you say, “Wait a minute; you just said that it was all God.” Well, that’s our response to the work of God, but listen carefully. Even that is generated by God. Even that is generated by God, for by grace are you saved through faith. Even that is not of yourselves but it is the, what? Gift of God.
It is GOD who gives you the power to hope in Christ.
It is GOD who opens your ears to hear the message of the truth, to hear the gospel of salvation and believe.
    That, too, is a gift.
    It’s all of Him.
It’s all energized by the Holy Spirit.
You can’t hope in Christ without the Holy Spirit generating that hope.
You can’t believe in Christ without the Holy Spirit generating that faith.
So, for what part of our salvation do we deserve praise? None, absolutely none. Absolutely none.
The whole human race on its way to hell, and they will be damned to hell because of unbelief.
They are condemned, Jesus said in John 3, because they believe not. But God, in sovereign grace, has chosen to save those He has set His love upon. And He picks them up out of the stream of men cascading into hell.
    What a blessed truth.
    What a humbling truth.
    What a pride-smashing truth.
We are all saved by His grace.
Can we thank Him enough? Why us? Why us? No wonder verse 3 says what it says:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”
The BLESSING belongs to Him, the GLORY belongs to Him, the PRAISE belongs to Him.

And as John as often preached and there is a message: "TWO DIVINE TRUTHS: Soverignty of God & Responsibility of Man" in salvation. Born Again ... you will have many posts to read to be taught & encouraged & enlightened.

  • It sad how some churches are misleading people. Why does there have to be so many theories out there. Calvinism, dispensationalism, and I’m sure many others that I’m not aware of..

Christian Reconstructionism is also known as Theonomy (Rule by God’s law), Dominion theology.

Founders: Arose out of the conservative Reformed (Calvinist) churches. The leading proponent is Rousas John Rushdoony (1916 – 2001) who in 1973 published the Institutes of Biblical Law, a large work expounding the 10 commandments.

Recent advocates are Gary North, Gary DeMar, Kenneth Gentry, Larry Pratt, Greg Bahnsen.

    Membership:
Few adherents, are usually Calvinists and hold to the orthodox doctrines of the Trinity, the deity of Christ, vicarious atonement, Christ’s physical resurrection, justification by faith, etc.

    Teachings:
Christian Reconstructionism (also known as theonomy) is a highly controversial movement within some conservative Christian circles. It maintains that the world should be brought under (reconstructed) the lordship of Jesus Christ in all areas: social, moral, political, judicial, military, family, art, education, music, etc. Christian Reconstructionism advocates the restoration of Old Testament civil and moral laws in order to reconstruct present American society into an Old Testament-type Mosaic form and that the three main areas of society – family, church, government – should all be biblically modeled, the Bible being the sole standard. This would include severe punishments for lawbreakers. Some Christian reconstructionists would advocate death for adulterers, abortionists, idolaters, murderers, homosexuals, rapists, etc.

Reconstructionists maintain a strong belief that the Bible is true and inerrant. They are generally postmillennial and believe that through the preaching and teaching of the gospel, the world will be converted to Christianity and that Christ will return in a period of time after the world is converted.

Christian reconstructionism advocates removing prisons and replacing them with the practice of restoration of damages done. Christians are the new chosen people of God, replacing national Israel. Other religious systems would be strongly resisted.

There is a debate among some Christian reconstructionists on whether or not slavery should be reinstituted; not all are in agreement.

It opposes evolution and teaches Jesus will physically return to Israel.

Christian reconstructionism began with the publication of the Institute of Biblical Law by R. J. Rushdoony in 1973. This 800-page work expounded on the 10 Commandments. After Rushdoony’s death in 2001, his son-in-law Gary North took the reins and has become a prolific writer, further advocating Christian Reconstructionism.

Publications: Conspiracy, published in 1986, also Was Calvin a theonomist, published in 1990by Gary North, Ph.D, president of the Institute for Christian Economics; By What Standard, The Roots of Reconstructionism, The Mythology of Science, The Biblical Philosophy of History, Institutes of biblical law, by R. J. Rushdoony

Comments: This movement rose out of Calvinism. It is an extremist Christian movement, not held by very many people.

The concern is that when a religiously dominated society has control of the family, moral, and governmental regulations, who is to govern the governors?
