- Once a student is admitted, the next step before every field mapping exercise is preparation. Before every field mapping trip as a geology student, there were weeks of lecture and practical sessions. Our lecturers would teach us how to read maps, handle instruments, and interpret geological features. Those classes didn’t always feel exciting at the time, but looking back, I realize how vital they were. Without them, we wouldn’t have known what to look for or how to find our way once we were out in the field.
No student ever stepped out empty-handed. Among the many instruments, three were most essential: the Topographic Map, the GPS, and the Compass Clinometer.
Each of these tools had a purpose. The topographic map showed us the landscape (the heights, the valleys, and the boundaries). Without it, we could easily lose our way or walk in circles. The GPS helped us know exactly where we were and guided us when we drifted off course. And the compass clinometer helped us find direction.
These same essentials mirror what every believer needs for the journey of faith.
The WORD OF GOD is our map. It gives shape to the unseen terrain of life, helping us navigate through the mountains and valleys of daily experiences. Without the Word, we interpret life wrongly and risk walking paths God never designed for us.
The HOLY SPIRIT is our GPS. He guides in real time, speaking to our hearts when we drift, urging us back when we miss the way. The Spirit doesn’t just tell us where we are; He shows us where we need to be.
And the Compass Clinometer reminds me of DISCERNMENT and ALIGNMENT: the quiet knowing of when to move, how to move, and what direction to face.
Together, these three make every journey meaningful. The Word gives clarity, the Spirit gives guidance, and discernment gives balance.

- God is an endless source of strength, and he gives it generously.
“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength” (Isa. 40:29).
