  • Do Not Take God’s Presence for Granted

    Scripture

    Judges 16:20 (NKJV)
And she said The Philistines are upon you Samson So he awoke from his sleep and said I will go out as before at other times and shake myself free But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him

Strength Is Sustained by God’s Presence

Judges chapter 16 records the tragic downfall of Samson. A man called and empowered by God gradually compromises his consecration. What began as small disregard for boundaries grows into deeper surrender to temptation. Eventually Samson reveals the secret tied to his Nazirite calling, and his strength leaves him.

Verse 20 is one of the most sobering statements in Scripture. Samson assumed he could function as before. He expected the same strength, the same outcome, the same power. But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him. The tragedy was not immediate weakness but spiritual blindness.

This chapter teaches that spiritual strength is not automatic. It flows from obedience and fellowship with God. When consecration fades and compromise grows, sensitivity to God’s presence weakens. Samson did not lose power in a single moment. It was the result of repeated disregard for God’s boundaries.

Yet even in this chapter, grace appears at the end. When Samson humbles himself and cries out, God responds one final time. Failure is devastating, but repentance still matters.

For believers today Judges 16 reminds us not to treat God’s presence casually. Spiritual power is sustained by relationship, obedience, and dependence. We must guard our hearts carefully and remain faithful to what God has called us to.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Have I taken God’s presence or calling for granted

    2. Are there areas of compromise that are weakening my spiritual strength

    3. Do I remain sensitive to the Lord through obedience and prayer

    Prayer

Lord God guard my heart from compromise and spiritual blindness. Help me never to assume Your presence while neglecting obedience. Strengthen me to remain faithful and dependent on You daily. Restore sensitivity to Your Spirit and keep me close to You. In Jesus name Amen.
