  • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
    New International Version
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Most Christians know they should “take every thought captive “
But there is a hidden military term hidden in that phrase, that most Christians don’t know or hear about.
And once you see or rather understand it, then you realize you have been quoting the verse wrong your whole life.
Here is how we tend to use the verse.
    • Sinful thought pops in.
    • Take it captive.
    • Replace it with scripture.
While that’s not wrong, it’s also not the whole picture.
    Read 2 corinthians 10:3-5 slowly
Paul isn’t writing a self help tip, he is in the middle of description of a military siege.
    WE ARE AT WAR
And we have weapons powerful enough to demolish fortified systems.
Then we take every thought captive.
    This is a battle strategy.
    Paul starts with “Strongholds “
The Greek word ochyrómata meaning a fortified military garrison.
Corinth was a Roman colony they knew what a fortress looked like.
The strongholds that Paul is destroying are thoughts walled off against God.
    Then he says demolish arguments
    In Greek logismous
    Meaning philosophical/intellectual frameworks.
    Destroying
    Greek philosophy
    Roman rhetoric
    Jewish legalise
Anything that position itself as the final word on reality.
    Now we have “everything “
Greek noéma not a passing thought or feeling but a scheme, a design or an idea with architecture/substance strength to it.
We are still in a siege just moved from the fortified walls to the soldiers inside.
    And captive
Greek word archmalòtizo meaning to take as prisoners of war by force at spear point.
When a city falls all the soldiers inside are taken prisoner not just the bad ones but all of them!
Not just a coping system it’s total conquest total change of ownership.
Paul isn’t asking how I handle my thought life.
He is asking who is defining reality.
    Every philosophy
    Argument
    Framework of thinking
Is taken prisoner and brought under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
When we apply this in our lives we become more than conquerors we start living a Kingdom life a victorious life a life where Jesus is Lord.
    Closing prayer
