```DAILY ANNA - (A DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE FOR ADULTS)
WEDNESDAY 20TH MAY, 2026```
*BREVITY OF LIFE* 🫵🏽🏽🏽🫃🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏾🏽🏽🏽
```TEXT:PSALM 90:1-12```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (PSALM 90:12).*_
*Charles Spurgeon, the renowned English preacher, described the brevity of human life in five simple words: "It is sown, grown, blown, mown, gone." In a similar light, Moses, the man of God, reflects on the fleeting nature of life in contrast to God's eternal existence. He employs various metaphors to illustrate the transience and mortality of man, emphasising that sin has brought judgment from God upon humanity, thus shortening our days on earth. He then prays for wisdom to make the most of this brief life.*
*The text reminds us not to squander our limited time on earth. Regardless of how long we may live, our time here is short compared to eternity. We need God's guidance to spend our days wisely and productively. The psalmist's plea for divine assistance in numbering our days resonates with the New Testament's call to redeem the time. To redeem the time means to seize every opportunity and make the best use of our moments.*
*Those who are aware of the brevity of life will be prompted to repent swiftly, lest they perish in sin and face eternal damnation. Believers, too, should avoid living in secret sin, realising that what is hidden from earthly eyes is fully visible to God. Rather than wasting our days on unproductive pursuits, we should invest them in righteous acts and soul-winning that yield eternal rewards. This psalm invites everyone to reflect soberly on life's temporal nature, a message echoed in Fanny Crosby's timeless hymn, _"Be in Time!"_ In the lyrics, she writes:*
_*"Life at best is very brief,*_
_*Like the falling of a leaf,*_
_*Like the binding of a sheaf,*_
_*Be in time!*_
_*Fleeting days are telling fast,*_
_*That the die will soon be cast,*_
_*And the fatal line be passed,*_
_*Be in time!"*_
_*"Be in time, be in time,*_
_*While the voice of Jesus calls you, be in time!*_
_*If in sin you longer wait,*_
_*You may find no open gate,*_
_*And your cry be just too late, be in time!"*_
_*"Fairest flowers soon decay,*_
_*Youth and beauty pass away,*_
_*Oh, you have not long to stay,*_
_*Be in time!*_
_*While God’s Spirit bids you come,*_
_*Sinner, do no longer roam,*_
_*Lest you seal your helpless doom,*_
_*Be in time!"*_
_*"Be in time, be in time,*_
_*While the voice of Jesus calls you, be in time!*_
_*If in sin you longer wait,*_
_*You may find no open gate,*_
_*And your cry be just too late, be in time!"*_
*RISE ABOVE YOUR WEAKNESS* 🫵🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽
```TEXT:1 CORINTHIANS 2:1-5```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling" (1 CORINTHIANS 2:2, 3).*_
*Failure to recognise personal, vocal excesses and rise above them can lead to failure or underperformance. French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte failed to consider his limitations when he invaded Russia in 1812. His weakness in logistics and strategic planning led to a series of costly mistakes. He underestimated the Russian winter, overextended his supply lines and failed to adapt to changing circumstances. The result was that the invasion ended in disaster, with the loss of thousands of soldiers.*
*As Apostle Paul approached the Corinthian brethren, he was aware of his weaknesses. He realised his emotional inabilities, fears and anxieties, mainly because of the hostility of the environment. He knew that relying on his gift of eloquence or carnal wisdom would not give him the needed breakthrough into the hearts of the sophisticated Corinthians. Moreover, he wanted, more than anything else, that the faith of the believers should rest on God's power and not on human props. And this he could not achieve by relying on his human strength and gifts. Therefore, he had to draw strength from the Lord. He believed that the power of a transforming gospel lies in its divine origin and not in the speaker's abilities.*
*Unlike Paul, many believers today focus so much on their perceived abilities; they do not realise their limitations. When we fail to realise that we are limited in some ways, we become presumptuous. This subtle manifestation of pride often leads to bitter falls and sometimes irreparable losses. On the other hand, dwelling on our weaknesses and letting them hinder us is not good either. Whether they are emotional or intellectual shortcomings, arising from our racial or family background, economic or financial constraints, social class, physical challenges or cultural challenges or even intense opposition and persecution, we must not allow any of these to stop us from fulfilling the assignment or call the Lord has given to us. Whatever weaknesses we may have, we can and should rise above them.*
*Realising we are limited in ourselves is fine. It helps us to depend on God's grace alone to accomplish the task He has given us. We stay humble, knowing that we have nothing within ourselves to boast about. We should draw strength from Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. In Christ alone we find all sufficiency.*
*HONOUR HIS ANOINTED* 🫵🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽
```TEXT:GALATIANS 4:14-18```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me" (GALATIANS 4:15).*_
*Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932, was once asked why he was not troubled, attending a small church where the preacher was a most ordinary man with no originality as a thinker. Dr. Holmes gave this fine reply: "I go because I have a little plant called Reverence, and I must need water it once a week or it would die."*
*Apostle Paul corrected the Galatian church for the dissipation of the once flourishing virtue amongst them. They once loved and cherished him, but they no longer manifested the same affection towards him for whatever reason(s). The infiltration of false teachers affected them. They no longer loved and appreciated their mentor and spiritual father. Evil communication had corrupted their good manners. Yet they failed to realise that when we honour God's servants, we honour God. Conversely, dishonouring God's anointed implies dishonour for God.*
*Ministers of God are His representatives among men, chosen and anointed as shepherds accountable to Him. God anoints them for His unique service, and we are not allowed to dishonour them. David was smitten in the heart when he cut off the fringe of King Saul's skirt. He regretted what he did because Saul was God's anointed. Persecutions and difficulties are no excuses for disobedience. You can always commit your ways to God, the righteous Judge, for mediation and intervention. When believers criticise, speak carelessly, murmur against, or falsely accuse their leaders, they dishonour God's anointed, and He would not be pleased with them. It is even more delicate when we neglect to obey the word of God they teach us.*
*On the other hand, believers must be weary of false teachers and prophets who creep into fellowship to corrupt gatherings of saints with pernicious words. Their influence can be very damaging. They beguile unstable souls and make merchandise of the innocent and the gullible. We are not to obey, or follow preachers, who show wrong examples, and aim to turn us away from God.*
*SATAN'S PLOT; CHRIST'S PRAYER* 🫵🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽
```TEXT:LUKE 22:31-34```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren" (LUKE 22:31, 32).*_
*In warfare, a common strategy is to capture or kill key leaders on the enemy's side to gain tactical advantage. The killing of Osama bin Laden was a pivotal moment in modern history, marking the end of the decade-long chase for the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. It also crippled and weakened the influence of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group.*
*This kind of strategy also applies in spiritual warfare. The devil targets those he considers key leaders and influential disciples of Christ. Recognising Peter's significant position and relevance in God's plan for the Church, he wanted to destroy Peter's faith and abort God's plan for him. However, Jesus knew Satan's plot; thus, He forewarned Peter, reassuring him of His prayers. Rather than heed Christ's warning, Peter began to boast of his love and loyalty to Christ.*
*Satan's plot against Peter applies to all believers. He constantly desires to take us down. The devil considers every believer a potential threat to him and his kingdom. Therefore, he tries to get the believer out of favour with God and render him weak and useless such that he can no longer pose a threat to him. Satan uses fierce and bitter opposition or subtle temptations to allure the unsuspecting Christian. But we have the comforting assurance that Jesus is praying for us.*
*However, Christ's intercession for us does not absolve us of the responsibility of staying on guard always. While we are not to become scared of the devil, we cannot afford to be carefree, careless, presumptuous, or self-confident. We must constantly watch and pray. There is no spiritual level we can attain, or how close to God we can be, that will keep us out of the devil's temptations and plot. Satan does not give up on anyone at all. He does not mind waiting as long as it takes to hunt down a believer. We must, therefore, constantly watch and pray. Take to the counsel of Charlotte Elliott, the hymn writer:*
_*"Gird thy heavenly armour on,*_
_*Wear it ever night and day;*_
_*Ambushed lies the evil one;*_
_*Watch and pray."*_
*As long as we keep trusting in the Lord and abide in His words, we can be sure of victory over the devil no matter how long and hard he tries!*
```TEXT:JONAH 3:6-10```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not" (JONAH 3:10).*_
*In his book, Timothy Jennings, a psychiatrist and Christian author, writes of the danger of unrecognised heart conditions: "Hypertension - high blood pressure - has been called the silent killer, but medical professionals didn't always realise this. In fact, some doctors argued that hypertension was a made-up disorder that didn't need to be treated at all". For instance, in 1931 Dr. John J. Hay, a British senior physician proclaimed: "The greatest danger to a man with high blood pressure lies in its discovery, because then some fool is certain to try and reduce it." Tragic results followed from this reckless statement which some experts now argue was taken out of context. Further medical studies later provided better answers that have facilitated the treatment of those conditions.*
*This applies to the way Jonah's fiery preaching of impending judgment upon sinful Nineveh triggered a change of heart after years of impudence and stonewalling. Nineveh was on God's agenda for severe judgment. That was the case, until the reluctant Prophet Jonah, came with his fiery message of doom. Although Jonah did not provide any panacea that could encourage hope in the Ninevites, nonetheless, they heeded the call of their king, who proclaimed a fast to plead for forgiveness. The response of the king was immediate and decisive: he ordered a national dry fast (no food or water) and charged everyone to "cry mightily to God." He understood that conviction must be followed by confession, prayer for pardon and the forsaking of past sins. His rhetorical question of whether God would pardon should be seen as a sinner's acknowledgement of the depth of his depravity and God's absolute prerogative to forgive sins. It was not the fasting that brought God's forgiveness and mercy, but the genuine repentance.*
*Living around the precipice of danger, while holding on to a wrong assumption, can be damnable. So also is the careless attitude of dismissing a serious situation without probing further. God expects the sinner to respond to the gospel message, rather than believing all is well because they do not feel any danger in the present. Very important too is the need for us to preach the word of salvation very clearly, so the world can be acquainted with the danger they face. The impact of the Word is the conviction of hearts as seen in the text. No conversion can take place without the proclaimed gospel, which brings conviction and godly sorrow for sins, confession and turning away from sin to the Saviour.*
*In our current dispensation of grace, sinners should not doubt God's willingness to pardon, if they come in the name of Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for mankind. Neither should they doubt God's readiness to judge sinners who refuse to heed His warnings.*
In fact, some doctors argued that hypertension was a made-up disorder that didn't need to be treated at all". For instance, in 1931 Dr. John J. Hay, a British senior physician proclaimed: "The greatest danger to a man with high blood pressure lies in its discovery, because then some fool is certain to try and reduce it." Tragic results followed from this reckless statement which some experts now argue was taken out of context. Further medical studies later provided better answers that have facilitated the treatment of those conditions.* *This applies to the way Jonah's fiery preaching of impending judgment upon sinful Nineveh triggered a change of heart after years of impudence and stonewalling. Nineveh was on God's agenda for severe judgment. That was the case, until the reluctant Prophet Jonah, came with his fiery message of doom. Although Jonah did not provide any panacea that could encourage hope in the Ninevites, nonetheless, they heeded the call of their king, who proclaimed a fast to plead for forgiveness. The response of the king was immediate and decisive: he ordered a national dry fast (no food or water) and charged everyone to "cry mightily to God." He understood that conviction must be followed by confession, prayer for pardon and the forsaking of past sins. His rhetorical question of whether God would pardon should be seen as a sinner's acknowledgement of the depth of his depravity and God's absolute prerogative to forgive sins. It was not the fasting that brought God's forgiveness and mercy, but the genuine repentance.* *Living around the precipice of danger, while holding on to a wrong assumption, can be damnable. So also is the careless attitude of dismissing a serious situation without probing further. God expects the sinner to respond to the gospel message, rather than believing all is well because they do not feel any danger in the present. Very important too is the need for us to preach the word of salvation very clearly, so the world can be acquainted with the danger they face. The impact of the Word is the conviction of hearts as seen in the text. No conversion can take place without the proclaimed gospel, which brings conviction and godly sorrow for sins, confession and turning away from sin to the Saviour.* *In our current dispensation of grace, sinners should not doubt God's willingness to pardon, if they come in the name of Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for mankind. ```TEXT:MARK 15:27-32```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Save thyself, and come down from the cross" (MARK 15:30).*_
*It was around 1941 when Nazi brutality was getting to its height that a Polish Franciscan Priest named Maximilian Kolbe became the symbol of sacrificial death for others during _World War II._ The inspiring incident happened in the Auschwitz concentration camp, when he voluntarily took the place of a fellow prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who was condemned to die. Kolbe offered his life so that Gajowniczek, a husband and father, could live. This monumental and inspiring act is now tagged: _"The Sacrifice of Maximilian Kolbe (1941)"._*
*Apart from the iconic sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Himself, this relatable story has inspired generations of believers and missionaries to consider nothing too precious to give up in order to rescue people from impending damnation. There have been countless number of missionaries that have paid the supreme price in South America, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Others faced the harshness of the _Iron Curtain_ nations in the Communist era, and confronted other hostile communities in an attempt to share Christ's gospel of redemption.*
*Kolbe's act of selfless love and sacrifice no doubt mirrors the infinitely greater redemptive love of Christ that believers must model. Of course, the narratives in the New Testament and the actual historical event of His passion, agonising prayer at Gethsemane, betrayal by one of His close disciples, His kangaroo court trials, cruel treatment, mocking and eventual crucifixion, only affirm His sacrificial love for mankind.*
*It is said that when Jesus was nailed to the cross, our sin was also nailed there. He was punished so that we will be set free from condemnation. He died so that we can live. As prophetically revealed in the Scripture, Christ paid a high price for our salvation.*
*There are a few lessons we need to take away from this meditation. These include our obligation to reciprocate that sacrifice through our unconditional love for Christ and His sheep; our total submission to His perfect will; our commitment to take the gospel message to others, lest His suffering and death at Calvary be a waste in the lives of those who may perish without hearing and receiving the good news.*

```TEXT:JOEL 3:9-13```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong" (JOEL 3:10).*_
*Those who choose in life to take Satan's side shall sooner rather than later, find out the futility of fighting against God. They would also be struck by the realisation that there is no sitting on the fence either in the warfare raging between light and darkness, or in the impending great end-time battles.*
*Our passage is a prophetic portrayal of the final showdown between the forces of good headed by Christ and the hordes of evil led by the Antichrist. The battle of Armageddon shall take place just before the commencement of Christ's 1,000-year reign. This battle would be man's penultimate act of rebellion against the dominion of God. The battle of Gog and Magog at the completion of the millennial reign of Christ will be the last.*
*A striking fallout of this battle is in the call to arms. Prophet Isaiah had earlier prophesied of the kingdom of Christ in which all are bidden to "Beat their swords into pruning-hooks, and their spears into plougshares." Prophet Micah repeated the prophecy using the same words. The conversion of weapons into wealth creation tools means there would be no more war. It is a confirmation of the universal peace, safety and prosperity that will be the hallmarks of Christ's reign. Conversely, Joel's prophecy highlights how sin converts the instruments of peace into the implements of war. It represents a reversal of the conditions, under the tyranny of Satan, where there is no peace but war: "Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears." To expect a modicum of peace under the dominion of the devil is to misjudge the diabolical bent of one who is evil personified.*
*The decision of which camp you will belong during these great battles of the last days is yours to take, and right now, too. Cast your lot with Jesus by turning away from all known sin and accepting God's pardon by faith. Joining Christ's winning team is never something to regret; therefore, take courage and do it now.*

*CHRISTIAN SUBMISSION* 🫵🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽🏽
```TEXT:1 PETER 2:13-17```
```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well" (1 PETER 2:13, 14).*_
*Elizabeth Elliot, the Christian missionary, author and speaker once noted that, "Throughout the Bible... when God asked a man to do something, methods, means, and specific directions were always provided. The man had one thing to do: obey."*
*The writer of today's passage highlights two critical areas of concern for the Christian in a dark, corrupt, and perverted world. Unarguably, the whole world lies in wickedness, yet the believer is called to a life of obedience and submission to our societies' rules and regulations. Grace in a believer makes him or her demonstrate Christlike virtues of love, peaceableness and respect for order. The haughty spirit that makes a sinner misbehave and disregard others has been crushed at the cross. True believers see others as offspring of the heavenly Father, and, therefore, relate with them as He would that they do to Him. In the same vein, the Apostle admonishes saints to respect and submit to the laws of the land and constituted authorities put in place for the smooth running of the society, and to ensure our corporate existence. Nonetheless, governors must rule with the fear of God, not oppressing the citizens. They should treat people as fellow humans, knowing they also have a Master in heaven who, without respect of persons, would judge all men without partiality.*
*Jesus and His disciples paid tax while on earth. We must follow His example. Christians should pay taxes, rates, utility bills, and development levies. And as responsible citizens, we do not participate in acts that may lead to the breakdown of law and order. That would be unprofitable to us and could make men blaspheme the holy name of the Lord. Moreover, as role models, believers must do nothing detrimental to the survival, growth and progress of the organisations or institutions they belong. They are to team up with those in authority to uplift the ethos of their communities.*
*It contradicts terms if believers live contrary to God's word. The disciples were first called Christians because people in Antioch saw the practical demonstration of Christlikeness in them. Many who profess faith in Christ today major in charisma and are minor in character. They forget that charismatic gifts do not translate into right standing with God and never replace holiness and Christian conduct. After all, the ass of Balaam spoke in the clear human language, yet, it remained an animal, not a man. Let your life reflect the gospel that you preach and embody.*

```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net" (LUKE 5:5).*_
*Frustrations are an unavoidable aspect of life, and individuals respond to them in various ways. John Hightower, a former commanding general of _John Hay Air Station_ in the Philippines, sought a unique approach to managing frustration by establishing the _Cemetery of Negativism_ in 1981. This symbolic site serves as a place to metaphorically bury negative emotions and thoughts rather than the deceased. One gravestone features the phrase "It's not possible," intended to promote positive thinking. A reminder at the entrance states that "Negativism is man's greatest self-imposed infliction," underscoring the burdens imposed by negative attitudes. The cemetery encourages visitors to contemplate their perspectives and depart in a more positive state.*
*After a fruitless night of fishing at the Lake of Gennesaret, Simon Peter and his partners faced frustration. Jesus, teaching the crowds, utilised Peter's empty boat to continue His message. Following the teaching, Jesus instructed Peter to venture into deeper waters - a request that seemed unreasonable given the circumstances. Despite his reservations, Peter complied, resulting in an overwhelming catch of fish that necessitated the help of his colleagues. This miraculous event led Peter, Andrew, James, and John to accept Jesus' call to follow Him.*
*Our frustrations may arise from similar or other causes. We may be experiencing a drought in business. There could be problems with life or the family, and we need a strong hand to stand by us. It could be a relationship that failed to yield its objectives. Or a job interview that resulted in a regret letter, instead of an employment letter. Whatever it is that life serves us, we must avoid the urge to become bitter and frustrated, leaving the room open for Satan to come in with his evil suggestions.*
*Life-changing moments occur when we demonstrate sincere love for Christ through unwavering trust, even in the absence of immediate rewards. Jesus can achieve in moments what might take us an entire night of struggle. It is essential not only to trust Him during difficult times but also to exercise patience as we await transformation. The resolution to our frustrations may not come swiftly; however, if one has a persistent issue causing distress, it is assured that through absolute trust and patience, a miraculous resolution will manifest. We must set aside our fears, worries, and anxieties as we await the fulfilment of God's promises.*
Initiatives like the Ganaca courts and public apologies encouraged citizens to face their past, seek forgiveness, and rebuild trust. This repentance was crucial for healing the nation, fostering unity, and paving the way for progress.*
*Today's text parallels Israel's leaders, who were also working towards restitution. It highlights Ezra's reform efforts, showcasing a list of individuals who had married foreign wives and were now dedicated to making amends. The first group mentioned included the descendants of Joshua, the high priest who played a vital role in rebuilding the temple. Despite his strong leadership, his descendants married pagan women, setting a poor example for others. This underscores the importance of penitence, starting with leaders and extending through all levels of the Church and society. Ezra's focus on spiritual leaders emphasises the seriousness of their sins, reminding us that even respected figures can fall if they are not watchful.*
*The Levites, who supported the priests and the singers, who were essential to worship, were also caught up in these offences, showing the widespread nature of sin. If we are not careful, sin can spread within the family, the Church, and the community. However, true revival begins when leaders take responsibility for their actions, humbly model contrition, and inspire others to follow suit.*
*Finally, restitution, as demonstrated in this account, is more than sorrowing for wrongdoing - it requires a sincere change of heart, a commitment to obedience, and concrete efforts for genuine contrition. In this narrative, the offenders' willingness to correct their wrongs reflects God's expectation that we make amends after repentance. This process gives us a clear conscience before God and man. It also restores trust and unity among the brethren, showing transformation. Do a personal check: Is there any area in which you need to repent or make restitution?*
