- DAY 8 – Fasting with Purpose
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [17] But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; [18] that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee
-Matthew 6:16–18
Thought Of The Day...
Fasting Is Pursuit, Not Performance
In Matthew 6, Jesus addresses the heart behind fasting. He warns against disfigured faces, public displays, and spiritual theatrics. Why? Because fasting was never meant to impress people—it was meant to draw closer to God.
Fasting is not about looking spiritual. It is about becoming spiritual.
It is not about outward deprivation—it is about inward transformation.
When we fast with the wrong motive, we lose the reward. But when we fast in secret, with sincerity and humility, our Father who sees in secret responds openly. Fasting shifts our focus from the flesh to the Spirit. It weakens our appetites so our awareness of God can grow stronger.
During Lent, fasting reminds us that:
• Man does not live by bread alone.
• Our deepest hunger is not physical—it is spiritual.
• What we deny in the flesh makes room for God in the spirit.
Every craving you silence becomes a cry for God.
Every skipped meal becomes a declaration: “Lord, You are my sustenance.”
Fasting is not starvation—it is saturation.
It is filling the space of food, media, noise, or comfort with prayer, worship, and the Word.
When done with purpose, fasting:
• Clarifies your spiritual vision
• Breaks the dominance of the flesh
• Sharpens your discernment
• Deepens your intimacy with God
This is pursuit. This is hunger for righteousness.
Prayer...
Heavenly Father, I come before You with a sincere heart, desiring more of You and less of me. As I enter into this time of fasting, purify my motives. Remove any desire to be seen, recognized, or praised by others. Let this fast be between You and me—a sacred exchange where I lay down my flesh and take up Your Spirit.
Lord, as my body feels hunger, remind me that my soul hungers even more for Your presence. When I feel weak, become my strength. When I feel distracted, draw my focus back to You. Teach me to replace every physical craving with prayer, every moment of weakness with worship, and every temptation with Your Word.
Break every unhealthy attachment in my life. If there is anything I depend on more than You—expose it, Lord. If there are habits that control me, loosen their grip. If there are desires that compete with my devotion, realign my heart. Let this fast uproot pride, impatience, fear, and self-indulgence. Cultivate in me discipline, humility, and spiritual sensitivity.
Father, sharpen my spiritual hearing so I can recognize Your voice more clearly. Open my eyes to see what You are revealing in this season. Give me discernment to understand what You are doing beneath the surface. Let this time of sacrifice produce lasting transformation, not temporary emotion.
Strengthen me when the flesh resists. Remind me that Your grace is sufficient. Help me to finish what I start with consistency and faithfulness. May this fast deepen my intimacy with You, increase my faith, and ignite a fresh fire in my spirit.
I surrender my appetite to You. I surrender my will to You. I surrender my desires to You.
Have Your way in me, Lord.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Declaration...
My spirit grows stronger than my flesh.
My hunger for God outweighs my appetite for the world.
I fast with purpose, and my Father sees and rewards me.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 19 مشاهدة1
