Genesis 19 – “Judgment and Mercy in Sodom”
Introduction
Genesis 19 records the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah—two cities that had become utterly corrupt and violent. Yet even in this scene of judgment, God’s mercy shines as He rescues Lot and his family.
This chapter shows that while God’s holiness demands justice, His heart always makes room for mercy. Faith means learning to flee from sin, not linger near it.
Context
● Author: Moses, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
● Audience: The Israelites, learning about God’s justice and mercy toward the righteous.
● Setting: The city of Sodom, where Lot had settled despite its growing wickedness.
● Purpose: To reveal God’s judgment against sin, His faithfulness to Abraham’s intercession, and His
mercy toward those who trust Him.
Verse-by-Verse Overview
Verses 1–3: The angels visit Lot.
Two angels arrive in Sodom at evening. Lot greets them at the gate and insists they stay in his home, showing hospitality much like Abraham did in Genesis 18.
Lesson: Even in a corrupt world, the righteous must remain kind and welcoming.
Verses 4–11: The sin of Sodom exposed.
Men from the city surround Lot’s house demanding to assault the visitors. Lot offers to protect them, but the crowd turns violent. The angels strike the men with blindness, rescuing Lot.
Lesson: Sin blinds people spiritually. Without repentance, moral corruption grows to open rebellion against God.
Verses 12–14: A warning to escape judgment.
The angels tell Lot to gather his family and leave the city because judgment is coming. Lot warns his
sons-in-law, but they think he’s joking.
Lesson: Many ignore warnings of judgment. God’s mercy calls, but unbelief makes people mock truth.
Verses 15–17: The urgency to flee.
At dawn, the angels urge Lot to hurry. When he hesitates, they take him, his wife, and his two daughters by the hand and lead them out of the city.
Lesson: God’s mercy often pulls us out of danger even when we hesitate. Salvation is always urgent—don’t delay obedience.
Verses 18–22: Lot’s request and Zoar spared.
Lot asks to flee to a small nearby town, Zoar, instead of the mountains. God grants his request and promises to spare it.
Lesson: God is patient even with weak faith. His compassion meets us where we are.
Verses 23–26: Judgment falls—and a warning remembered.
As the sun rises, God rains down fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot’s wife looks back and
becomes a pillar of salt.
Lesson: Looking back shows attachment to the old life. Faith moves forward and doesn’t long for what God is saving us from.
Verses 27–29: Abraham witnesses the aftermath.
Abraham sees the smoke rising from the plain and knows God has judged the cities. Yet God remembered Abraham and spared Lot for his sake.
Lesson: Intercession matters. God’s mercy toward others can flow through the prayers of the righteous.
Verses 30–38: Lot’s daughters and Moab and Ammon.
Afterward, Lot’s daughters, thinking no men remain, make their father drunk and bear sons through him—Moab and Ammon, future enemies of Israel.
Lesson: Even after being rescued, compromise and fear lead to new sin. Deliverance is only the beginning; we must keep walking in faith.
Application for Today
1. Flee from Sin: Don’t linger near what God calls you to leave. Obedience saves.
2. Believe God’s Warnings: Take His Word seriously—judgment and mercy are both real.
3. Don’t Look Back: Let go of past sins and attachments that keep you from freedom.
4. Intercede for Others: Your prayers can make a difference, just as Abraham’s did for Lot.
5. Walk Faithfully After Rescue: Salvation is the start of a journey, not the end.
