August 27 🌿 “WHEN I CANNOT SEE HIS HAND” WHEN GOD SEEMS FAR AWAY 📖 Psalm 13:1–2 (LLV) — “How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and carry sorrow in my heart day after day? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” There are seasons when God seems very near. Prayer comes easily. His presence feels real. His direction seems clear. And then there are other seasons. We pray, and heaven seems quiet. We search for an answer, and none appears. We ask God to change something, and another day passes without change. David knew that place. “How long, O LORD?” Those are not the words of a man who has stopped believing in God. They are the words of a man who believes God is there but cannot understand why He seems so far away. “Will You forget me forever?” David knew God had not literally forgotten him. But that is how it felt. And Scripture does not rebuke him for saying so. God allows David's honest words to become part of His Word. Perhaps that tells us something important about prayer. We do not have to hide our questions from God. We do not have to make our disappointment sound more spiritual than it is. We can say: “Lord, I don't understand.” “I have prayed, and nothing has changed.” “I know You are here, but right now I cannot feel Your presence.” “How long?” God already knows what is in our hearts. Prayer simply opens the door and lets Him into the conversation. David also says he wrestles with his thoughts and carries sorrow in his heart “day after day.” Waiting can be exhausting. Sometimes the hardest part of a trial is not knowing when it will end. If we knew, we might say, “I can endure until then.” But often God does not give us a date. He asks us to trust Him one day at a time. And today, we are not going to rush David toward the answer. We will eventually hear him say, “I trust in Your unfailing love.” But first, we will sit beside him for a moment in the silence. Because someone reading these words may be there right now. Praying. Waiting. Wondering. And perhaps they need to know that asking “How long?” does not mean they have lost their faith. Sometimes it means they still believe there is Someone worth asking. A new beginning can start with an honest question: when I cannot see God's hand, I can still bring Him the questions of my heart. Reflection: Is there something I have stopped talking to God about because I am disappointed, tired of waiting, or afraid that my questions show a lack of faith? Prayer: Heavenly Father, there are times when I do not understand Your silence. I know You have promised to be with me, yet sometimes You seem far away. Teach me to bring You my honest questions rather than hide them. When I grow tired of waiting, hold my faith steady even when my feelings are not. I may not understand what You are doing today, but help me keep talking to You until I can see Your hand again. In Jesus' name, Amen.
