The Bible views addiction as bondage to sin or false gods that enslave a person. But it also teaches that through Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and God’s Word, there is power for freedom, healing, and a new way of life.

Prayer of Surrender

“Lord Jesus, I confess that this addiction has had power over me. I lay it at Your feet. I cannot break free on my own, but I believe that through Your cross and resurrection, I can be set free. Take control of my life and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Amen.”

5. Renewed Mind
• Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
➝ Healing from addiction involves God reshaping how we think and what we desire.

4. Idolatry
• Exodus 20:3 – “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
➝ Anything we turn to for comfort, escape, or fulfillment instead of God can become an idol—even substances, behaviors, or desires.

3. Self-Control vs. Being Controlled
• 1 Corinthians 6:12 – “I will not be mastered by anything.”
➝ Addictions “master” us, but God’s Spirit empowers self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).

2. The Body as God’s Temple
• 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 – “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
➝ Addictions often damage the body, but God calls us to steward it with care.

1. Slavery vs. Freedom
• Romans 6:16 – “You are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness.”
➝ Addiction is pictured as slavery to sin, while Christ offers freedom.
• John 8:34–36 – Jesus says, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin… but if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
➝ True deliverance comes through Him.

So just a little bit of my struggles I’m dealing with right now is I’m a tobacco smoker have been for many years it is an addiction does it make me a non Christian no it doesn’t does it harm this body yes I have quit several times and it comes back just as quickly as I quit so yes it’s a battle and I will overcome come this just as I have with drugs and alcohol been clean from them 15 years now now it’s time to drop them smokes

In the Bible, the word “addiction” as we use it today doesn’t appear directly, but Scripture speaks a lot about being enslaved to desires, habits, or substances that control a person. The Bible frames addiction as a form of bondage that takes the place of God’s rightful rule in someone’s life.
