People of Worth
We became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight. --Numbers 13:33
When the Israelites were about to enter the promised land, God commanded them to send out spies. So Moses appointed twelve men, and they spent forty days searching out the land. Ten of the spies gave this report to the people in Numbers 13:27–28: “We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there.” Anak means long-necked or strong-necked; this was a clan of strong people. Caleb, one of the spies, tried to give the people some encouragement. He said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it” (v. 30). But ten of the spies argued with him, saying, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us. . . . The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. . . . We became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (vv. 31–33). Notice the effect that these “men of great size” had on the spies: “We became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Did you know that how other people perceive you is largely determined by how you perceive yourself? If you think of yourself as a grasshopper, then don’t be surprised if other people view you as a grasshopper. How we think of ourselves is how we behave, and that determines how other people see us. The term self-esteem is derided by many evangelical Christians. They say, “We’re nothing but lowly worms; we aren’t worth anything.” But the Bible says God loved us so much that He sent His own Son to redeem us. Because God created us, loves us, and redeemed us, we are people of great worth--and we ought to act like it. The Israelites weren’t acting like God’s people. They saw themselves as grasshoppers rather than as sons and daughters of God. Today’s devotion is adapted from “Overcoming the Fear Factor,” by Dr. Robert Jeffress, 2013.
