- ANSWERS TO OBJECTIONS CONCERNING TITHING AND KEEPING OLD TESTAMENT LAW.
Objection# 1 Abraham paid tithes so we must.
Answer.
Before the law was given, Abraham gave a tithe of all the spoils of war to Melchizedek (preincarnate Son of God) Genesis 14:16-20. See also Hebrews 7;4-10. Money was not involved but spoils of war. Abraham freely chose to give a tenth and did not tell anyone else in his household to tithe thereafter. Abraham also built altars, lived in a tent, and had a concubine before the law. Does this mean according to the tithing teacher's reasoning, we are to do the same? God did not command a tenth of anything to Abraham, Isaac or Jacob. If tithing is before the law and still binding today on the Christian, why were the patriarchs not commanded by God to give a tenth of all they had, especially if tithing was instituted before the law?
We are under the New Testament of giving today and not the Old Testament Law of tithing.
Instead of binding Christians under Old Testament law and putting them in bondage,(Galatians 5:1) why not teach New Testament principles of generous giving to the work of God and supporting His ministry? Instead, tithing teachers today, afraid to trust God for their finances, instill fear in their churches telling them that they are cursed and even hell bound if they do not tithe.
The Old Testament law of Moses teaches a ten percent tithe of everything. Not just your paycheck. Some verses showing this are Leviticus 27:30, Numbers 18:26, Deuteronomy 14:24-26, 2 Chronicles 31:5. If you are required to tithe, you need to give a tenth of ALL income not just your paycheck. This includes garden produce, any gifts you receive from birthdays, holidays, personal belongings and the sale of any property. All income of any kind is subject to the tithe. Malachi 3:10 was written to the nation of Israel at the time and not the New Testament church. Jesus nailed the law of Moses to the cross Colossians 2:14.
The tithe, under Moses, commanded by God, was required as a binding law on Old Testament Israel. Under grace and the New Testament it is now giving, not grudgingly, and no percentage set amount. Give as you are prospered. 2 Corinthians 9:7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. Never once in the New Testament was any command given to the church to tithe 10%! Instead the tithing teachers must give Old Testament law and misapply a few New Testament Scriptures where tithing was simply being mentioned under the Old covenant practices and law.
Objection #2
Jesus mentioned tithing so we are bound by Old Testament law to tithe.
Answer.
Matthew 23:23.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
Jesus is telling the scribes and Pharisees what they have been doing, revealing their heart, showing their hypocrisy. They paid their tithes as required under Old Testament law but neglected the deeper spiritual truths of justice, mercy and faith. Jesus had not died on the cross when He said this. The New Testament church was not established. The Old Covenant was still in effect. After His death the New Covenant of grace and truth was instituted. The law including tithing was nailed to the cross forever abolished and its curse.
Jesus came and was born under the law so He could fulfill it as only He could.
Galatians 4:4-5.
4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
John 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Colossians 2:14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Ephesians 2:15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace.
Anyone not trying to prove or support their unscriptural view of tithing can see Jesus is talking to Pharisees under the law of Moses not New Testament Christians under grace. Notice He did not turn to His disciples and tell them now you must do the same or now I say to you my disciples, tithe 10%. Jesus taught His disciples principles of giving, not tithing!
See Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” If tithing is so important, where is the verse in the New Testament saying this Old Testament practice is still binding on the Christian under grace? There is no New Testament verse saying tithe 10%.
Objection# 3
Jesus did not destroy the law but fulfilled it. Therefore we are bound by law to tithe.
Answer.
Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
We have already seen many Scriptures showing the law and its commandments were nailed to the cross and the Christian was never under it.
Colossians 2:14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to cross.
Heb 7:18 For there is a disannulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh(living like you did before you were a Christian), but after the Spirit(obey the New testament).
Hebrews 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
Hebrews 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.
Hebrews 8:13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Plainly the Scriptures teach the law and all its commandments were nailed to the cross and abolished forever. No Gentile or non jew was ever under the law in the first place. It was a covenant by God to the Jew alone. The Apostle Peter said by the Spirit in Acts 15:10 to the Jews thinking of putting the Gentile new believers under law "Why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers or we were able to bear"? A good question to ask the tithing teachers. Why are you attempting to put a yoke of bondage on the neck of the disciples God never once commanded in the New Testament?
How can Jesus fulfill the law, nail it to the cross, declare we are now dead to it, freed from it, abolished it forever in the Scriptures then require Christians under grace to keep it by tithing? Obviously Jesus would not contradict Himself as the tithing teachers declare. Jesus tells you what He meant in the next verse Matthew 5:18 Until heaven and earth pass not one jot or tittle (punctuation marks of Hebrew scriptures) will not pass until all is fulfilled. Everything prophesied concerning Himself and what God said He would do will come to pass.
Jesus coming did not nullify what the Old Testament prophets said would come to pass. The Old Testament is not done away with, but the Law of Moses is done away with and this includes the tithe. All that the prophets said surely will come to pass as Jesus fulfilled all they said about His birth, death, resurrection and His coming kingdom yet to be seen. Any other view saying that the law is still in effect teaches God is a God of confusion. We have given Scriptures proving we are not under the Old Testament law but grace and the New Testament.
Romans 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Galatians 3:23-25. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor(the law).
Luke 16:16 “The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it.
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Psalm 147:19-20. 19 He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any nation; And as for His judgments, they have not known them.
(Again showing only Israel was under law, never the New Testament church!)
Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage(law).
2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter(law) but of the Spirit(New Testament); for the letter(law) kills, but the Spirit(New Testament) gives life.
Galatians 5:4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Galatians 3:10-12. 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” 11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” 12 Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.”
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
Galatians 2:19-21. 19 For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”
Objection #4
God doesn't change. He said you have robbed Me in not giving tithes and are now cursed. Therefore you must tithe or you are cursed by God.
Malachi 3:6 and 8-10.
Answer.
God's unchangeable attribute known in theology as God's immutability teaches God in His nature, being, essence, and character never changes. Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday and forever. However this does not mean God is static, unable to work in His creative order according to His eternal plans and purposes. Probably the greatest proof of this is the Son of God Himself in the incarnation. Philippians 2:5-8. He changed His form from eternal invisible Spirit to human flesh and blood thus becoming human and divine, fully God and fully man.
Hebrews 7:12 states the priesthood was changed so it was necessary there was a change of the law. Jesus is now our High Priest (verse 26). Since the Scriptures do not contradict themselves as the tithing teachers present Him, God does change His dealings with men, covenants, law, and priesthood, but His nature of eternal love, wrath against sin, and Divine attributes never change. As we have already shown, no Christian was ever obligated or commanded to keep the Old Testament law with its curses on the disobedient. The Scriptures declare in Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. If Christ has redeemed us how can we be under its curse, bound to it. It was forever abolished and nailed to the cross with all its commandments and requirements including the 10% tithe.
Conclusion.
Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled with a yoke of bondage(law). When the tithing teachers are given the truth of the Scriptures, they immediately lash out in anger, give intimidating threats of God's judgment, saying you are cursed and hellbound showing what manner of spirit is motivating them. The tithing teachers need to hear what God said in Galatians 3:10 As many as are under the works of the law (as tithing) are under the curse, Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law.
James 2:10 Whoever shall keep the whole law and stumble (disobey) in one point is guilty of all. By putting yourself under any law in the Old Testament you are required to keep all of it. This means sacrifice, first fruits, tithing, feast days, burning witches, killing homosexuals, stoning rebellious children, following dietary laws and more. This shows the utter hypocrisy of the law and tithing teachers trying to bring the New Testament church under bondage to keep tithing laws. We will have to answer to God how we obeyed His Son Jesus and what He commanded us in His New Testament. We will answer who we gave our money to- ministers of fear, bondage and law or true ministers of grace and truth. We are to give as we are able, generously, cheerfully, to those faithful men of God and ministers who teach the truth of scriptural giving not tithing.
Philippians 4:15
Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel when I (apostle Paul) departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning GIVING and receiving but you only.
May God give you grace and understanding to search the Scriptures if these things be so.
God willing, more will posted soon. All glory to Jesus alone.❤️ANSWERS TO OBJECTIONS CONCERNING TITHING AND KEEPING OLD TESTAMENT LAW. Objection# 1 Abraham paid tithes so we must. Answer. - PEACE IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM
MATTHEW 12:46-50; 8:23-27; MARK 3:31-35; 4:35-41; LUKE 8:19-26
'And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master carest thou not that we perish?'
Mark 4:37-38
Considering the fact that the boat was filled with water, it is amazing that the disciples had to awaken Jesus. This was not a large ship with cabins below deck but rather a small, open boat and Jesus was, no doubt, 'soaked to the bone.' This reflects Jesus' humanity and how tired He must have been. It also shows that Jesus must have been in a very deep sleep. Medical science has discovered that the deeper we sleep, the more rest our bodies get. This is a clue as to how Jesus could maintain the grueling pace He kept, along only with an occasional all-night prayer time. He was receiving the maximum benefit from His sleep.
Jesus did not say 'Let us go out into the midst of the sea and drown in a storm.' He was going to the other side. This shows that the disciples still didn't understand Jesus' authority. They were committed to Him as their Messiah, but they hadn't yet realized that Jesus was Lord even over the physical elements. Many Christians still do this today. They receive the spiritual benefits of salvation but have not reaped the physical benefits of health and prosperity, which are also part of our salvation.
Whichever we focus upon - the storm, or the Lord in the midst of our storm - will determine how we manage the storms we face in life. He is not asleep concerning the things you face in this life, He's right there in your 'ship,' resting, because He knows you'll both get to the 'other side.' His peace is yours. Believe His Word. Rest in His love.
