Does God Hate Gay People?

Pastor Joseph Clark

The short answer: No. God does not hate gay people. Christians are called to love all people—including those in the LGBTQ+ community—while holding to the Biblical view that same-sex sexual acts are sinful and in God's words: abomination.

The Bible is clear that all sin—including heterosexual lust, greed, lying, and homosexual acts—is offensive to God. But no sin is greater than another. Only blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which is the rejection of Christ, is described as unforgivable (Matthew 12:31–32). Therefore, same-sex acts are not beyond God's forgiveness—but they are not to be affirmed as righteous. And one must repent from all sinful 'indulgences' in order to be saved in Christ.

As followers of Christ, we are not to judge others. Judgment belongs to God alone. Our responsibility is to love, minister, and share the gospel with all people. Christ spent time with those considered “sinners,” showing that the church must be a place of healing for the lost—not rejection.

Scripture does not call us to endorse sinful behavior but to call all people to repentance. A church that is faithful to Christ welcomes all, including gay individuals, while calling everyone—gay or straight—to turn from sin and follow Jesus.

Leadership within the church, however, requires a higher standard. The Bible teaches that overseers must be above reproach and live lives of integrity (1 Timothy 3:1–7). This applies to all forms of sexual sin, not just same-sex behavior.

True salvation transforms us. A person indulging in any unrepented sin—sexual or otherwise—must examine whether they’ve truly surrendered to Christ. God sees our struggles and extends grace to all who repent.

Christ commands us to love God and our neighbor (Luke 10:27). Our neighbor includes everyone—regardless of sexuality. Our love is demonstrated not through affirmation of sin, but through compassion, truth, and faithful witness to God's Word.
