A New Song.

We can see just how personal music is in the Bible. In Psalm 40, David sings, “He … brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps” (v. 2). As a result, David concluded, “He has put a new song in my mouth—praise to our God” (v. 3).

David was able to sing a new song because of what the Lord had done for him, because of the experience—in particular, the experience of salvation—he’d had with God. It is likewise interesting that his reaction to being saved was to sing. Indeed, the Bible consistently equates new songs with songs of praise for the Lord’s salvific act (Psalm 33:3; 96:1; 98:1; 149:1; Isaiah 42:10). It is not only that the song is new; it is that the Lord’s deliverance brought new life. It wrought renewal in you.

The 144,000 likewise will be delivered by God out of the great tribulation. It is this singular experience that will elicit from them this new song in today’s verse. That is the reason that no one else can sing it. As the only righteous ones alive at the time of the Second Coming, only the 144,000 will have lived through God’s final redemption of them “from the earth.”

They will have experienced the unimaginable terror of the worst persecution and the most unfathomable joy upon finally seeing Christ descend with glory and triumph. They will have personally gone through God’s end-time salvation from beginning to end.

Observe also that this verse firmly situates us in heaven, where we have previously seen God’s “throne” (Revelation 4:2), the “four living creatures” (v. 6), and the “elders” (v. 4). What an amazing God we have; He reveals to us in prophetic vision the absolute victory that His people will ultimately gain, when He, the Creator, has recreated the righteous unto everlasting life and created a new song in the mouths of His creation!

Savior and Redeemer, You alone are worthy of praise for You alone will deliver us from the power of death.

For Further Study: Matthew 26:26–30; Revelation 5:9; 15:3
KEY BIBLE TEXTS
And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. Revelation 14:3
