The Hour of Judgment.

Let’s go back to the complement of today’s verse, when Christ is similarly described as the One “who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it” (Revelation 10:6). Recall that this verse marked the end of the 2,300-day prophecy, which occurred in 1844.

In 1844, Christ entered the Most Holy Place in the heavenly sanctuary; “the court was seated, and the books were opened” (Daniel 7:10). Thus began the first phase of the final judgment, known as the investigative or pre-advent judgment, in which every person who has ever lived on Earth is judged either saved or lost. “The books,” or evidence, were laid before the judge to be investigated, and now the sentence for each individual is being decided, as we would expect in any fair court of law.

As the Scripture says, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10). Thus, each person is judged by how he or she has lived in this life, the evidence of their status of salvation.

After every sentence has been decided for either eternal life or eternal death, “the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works” (Matthew 16:27). That’s why this first phase is called the pre-advent judgment; it occurs before Christ’s second coming.

When Christ returns, notice that He comes with His rewards. What occurs at His return is the next phase of the judgment, the doling out of the sentences. He said, “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work” (Revelation 22:12).

We are currently living in His pre-advent judgment hour. Understanding this is the crucial warning of the first angel. And the decisions you make now—whether to worship God or not—determine your reward at Jesus’ second coming.

Righteous Judge, thank You for this prophetic warning, that we may make decisions with a full knowledge of the truth.
