The Riches of Poverty

Scripture

“Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: ‘Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.’”
— Luke 6:20 (NKJV)

“He Sees You”

Jesus looked up—into the eyes of those who had nothing, who were desperate, weary, and likely uncertain about tomorrow. And what He said next must have shocked them:

“Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”

Wait… blessed? The poor?

In a world that celebrates wealth, power, and success, Jesus speaks directly to those who are lacking—and calls them blessed. Why? Because when you have nothing to rely on in the world, you are in the perfect position to rely fully on God.

Being poor here isn’t just about financial status. It reflects a heart posture of humility and dependence. It’s a spiritual recognition that we need God's help, His presence, His provision—and not just physically, but eternally.

Jesus was giving hope: "You may be poor on earth, but you are rich in heaven. You may be empty now, but the Kingdom is yours."

This promise is powerful: The kingdom of God doesn’t belong to the proud or the privileged—but to the humble and the hungry.

1. Am I truly depending on God, or am I trusting in my own strength and resources?

2. Where in my life do I feel “poor” right now—and how might God use that to draw me closer?

3. Do I define blessing by comfort or by closeness to Christ?

Prayer
Father God, thank You for seeing me in my lack. Thank You that in my weakness, You offer the strength of Your Kingdom. Help me to see my need not as a curse, but as a path to deeper dependence on You. Fill every empty space with Your peace and presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
