MIRACLE (7) By BBJohn
In the gospel of John, a nobleman whose son was sick heard that Jesus had come to Galilee. He left his city of Capernaum and came to meet Jesus in Cana of Galilee. Like the Centurion whose story we just studied, he came to ask Jesus for the healing of his sick son. We all can seek the face of the Great Physician for the healing of our spouses and children.
On getting to Jesus, the unnamed nobleman tendered his request. It was an urgent request:
"... Come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death." (Jn. 4: 47)
He seemed not to have the kind of great faith that the Centurion had. The Centurion came to get a word from Jesus. This nobleman came to get Jesus Himself. So, Jesus began the process of building up a great faith in him. Let's see how He did it:
Jesus first challenged him to shift his faith-focus from signs and wonders to the word.
"Then Jesus said to him, Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe." (Jn. 4: 48)
But the nobleman seemed not to understand Jesus. Thus, he had to hasten Him up by repeating his request:
"The nobleman said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies!" (John 4: 49)
His lack of understanding led to the next step. Jesus, having understood his worry and frustration, gave the nobleman the second faith challenge:
"Jesus said to him, Go your way; your son lives." (John 4: 50)
What follows was amazing. The nobleman got challenge and his faith was lighted up. He believed.
"So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and went his way."
Miracle happened the moment he believed the word of Jesus. By the time he got home - which was several miles away, he met son healed. His servants had told him when his was healed - it was the moment Jesus spoke and he believed.
Like the nobleman, we must take the challenge of faith. Let's make a positive shift of our faith focus; a shift from signs and wonders to the spoken word. Enough of running after miracle workers for signs and wonders. Let's come back to the WORD. The word works miracles.
