Worshiping the Beast, Part 1

The third angel now brings into focus the two choices presented in the three angels’ messages: worshiping God or worshiping the devil. The first angel expounds upon worshiping God; this angel details the consequences of worshiping the devil. Recall that since the devil gave both beasts his authority, “worshiping the beast and his image” is the same as worshiping the devil.

Significantly, notice that these consequences are conditional. They will come about only “if” one “worships the beast and his image.” That alone delineates the matter of worship as a choice; there exists another option.

Also interesting are the voices of both the first and the third angel: They are both “loud.” Imagine a parent calling to his child in danger. The parent’s voice would be urgent, clear, and “loud,” wouldn’t it? The cries of the first and third angels are like that parent’s warning. Why is the parent’s voice so intense?

Foremost in the parent’s mind is the safety of his child. The parent is doing his utmost to protect the life of his child. In the three angels’ messages—and in today’s message especially—God is sounding the alarm for us. “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1). We are God’s children; God is our heavenly Father. God is doing His utmost to protect the life of His children through the three angels’ messages. Keep this perspective in mind as we read about the third angel’s message.

The third angel moreover puts a time stamp on his message. The events specified in today’s verse are clearly taken from Revelation 13, when the United States will have become a religiopolitical power and work in collusion with the papacy to establish a universal Sunday law. Here is proof that the three angels’ messages are primarily a warning for those events. Furthermore, note the explicit reference to the mark of the beast, the acceptance of the beast’s counterfeit day, Sunday, as God’s holy day. We’ll delve into the importance of this tomorrow.

Loving Father, may I take heed of Your final warning, that I may fully understand the consequences of worshiping the beast.

For Further Study: Deuteronomy 32:10–14; Psalm 36:7–9; Jeremiah 31:3
KEY BIBLE TEXTS
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, Revelation 14:9
