BE MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER.

Mercy is the willingness to help anyone in time of need especially through pardon of reconciliation. It is a habitual inclination of the will. This means that mercy is an attitude, a way of treating others and the world around us.

Mercy is the compassionate care for others, whereby one takes the burden of another as one's own. It is an active quality of the virtue of charity motivated by the love of God. Mercy is both a much sought-after gift and a life-giving action. Spiritual tradition tells us that people in need cry out for God's mercy and give praise when they recognize the presence of that mercy.

Mercy is always connected with Divine Presence and power. It is God who is merciful. God's mercy manifests in faithful, loving kindness that reaches out to save those in need. Jesus is the revelation of God's mercy.

Because God is lovingly merciful, His people are called to be an expression of mercy. Mercy is the loving kindness and faithful service we owe each other as members of God's family. It is the main characteristic of God's Kingdom.

Traditionally the Catholic Church has encouraged to understand the practice of merciful love by diving the works of mercy into two categories:
!. The Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry, Give drink to the thirsty, Shelter the homeless, Clothe the naked, Visit the sick, Visit the imprisoned, Bury the dead.
2. The Spiritual Works of Mercy: Admonish sinners, Instruct the uninformed, Counsel the doubtful, Comfort the sorrowful, Be patient with those who err, Forgive offenders, Pray for the living and the dead.

Too often works of mercy become a humanistic endeavor where one feels obligated to help because of peer pressure, or because it's the thing to do, and so they become philanthropic activities. Philanthropic activities are good but to be truly works of mercy and gain merit in heaven they must be done out of love for our neighbor which arises from our love for God. Without God as the keynote, all we do is FUTILE.
