FORGIVE THE OFFENDERS
Avenging wrongs done to oneself only results in deteriorating relationships. Revenge does not solve any problem in society.
God has created us to love and to be loved; yet we live in a cold, loveless society full of hate and revenge. The key to live a life of love and peace is MERCY and FORGIVENESS. Jesus commanded his followers "Love one another as I have loved you."
Genuine love emanates forgiveness. All of us are sinners and we ask our heavenly Father to forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who offend us.
Forgiveness is a spiritual work of mercy. It is found in strong persons.
Revenge is a form of self-defence that we have adapted to cause hurt to people who have hurt us and we store grudges against offenders as we build up anger leading to the actual act of revenge. Too many people hold grudges for a long time, but mostly end up making themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually sick. They live a life of bitterness. The only way to bring peace and happiness is by showing mercy.
What is forgiveness? There are many definitions for forgiveness but the most important thing is that forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling. It is a decision we make in our heart. It is a choice to release others from their sins against us. Forgiveness means letting go of the anger and the desire for revenge. Forgiveness is an act of mercy towards the offender. It is a gift of grace given to us by God. It is God's attribute shared with humans because they are endowed with intelligence and will.
Forgiveness is not a magic band with instant effect. It is an event in the sense that we must at some point decide to forgive. No one can force another person to be reconciled. That must come from God. When it happens we must forgive because God wants us to forgive and it will definitely benefit us as a spiritual work of mercy.
Is total forgiveness realistic? On a purely human level, the answer is no. On our own strength, we will never be able to forgive others as God forgives us-- completely, absolutely, freely, immediately, graciously with no strings attached. As long as we live on the human level, total forgiveness will be beyond our grasp. But once we bring God into the picture, everything changes BECAUSE WITH GOD, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.
