STUDY TO BE QUIET

And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you - 1 Thessalonians 4:11

We live in the Information Age. Television, radio, the Internet, social media, video games, books, and other forms of media bombard our senses with information on a daily basis. Movies, television shows, and videos full of violence, sexually explicit content, and profane language have come to characterise our generation. We therefore live in a very noisy world full of violence and chaos. We’re surrounded by a world that doesn’t know any peace. And if we allow it to enter our spirits, it will tamper with the peace that dwells inside us. Galatians 5:22 says, ‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, PEACE, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.’ Inside our human spirit dwells peace because of the Holy Spirit who dwells inside us. It should therefore be the easiest thing in the world for us to live in peace.

However, if we allow our spirits to be infiltrated by the world around us, we’ll experience the noise and chaos of this world. The five physical senses are doorways to our spirits. If we don’t guard what we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch, we will corrupt our spirits with the violence and chaos of this world. That’s why many homes are war zones. That’s why many workplaces are battlegrounds. That’s why there’s so much road rage, public shootings, and public unrest. Men and women lack peace because violence and chaos have entered their spirits. However, the word of God tells us to study to be quiet. We must learn to live a quiet life full of peace and quiet. God’s people must learn how not to contaminate their spirits with the world around them. Be aware of what media content you consume. The devices we own are portals that beam demonic entities into our lives. Satan travels through demonic music, horror movies, action films, and other forms of filthy content. He can even use the negative news content to bring fear into your life.

Proverbs 4:22 says, ‘Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.’ Learn to guard your spirit and refuse to allow content that robs you of your peace to infiltrate your heart. Out of your spirit flow the issues of life. If your spirit is contaminated with chaos and violence, your life will reflect what’s in your spirit. Study to be quiet. Another version says, ‘Aspire to live a quiet life.’ Switch the music off. Switch the television off. Switch the phone off. And begin to fill your life with the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding. Colossians 3:16 says, ‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.’ Instead of consuming corrupt media content, rather allow the word of Christ to dominate your spirit. Worship God by yourself. You don’t need an electronic device to sing to the Lord. Fast, pray, and do that which God has called you to. That’s where His peace resides. God has called us to peace, but for us to experience that peace, we’ll have to study to be quiet.

CONFESSION

I live a quiet life that’s full of peace and quiet. I guard my heart with all diligence and permit only that which is wholesome to enter into my spirit. Glory to God!
