The Works that Follow.
The next verse after the close of the three angels’ messages has a fascinating reference to time. Those “who die in the Lord from now on” (emphasis added) receive a special blessing. To what date is this referring? After what time will the faithful departed begin to be included in this group?
Recall that the three angels’ messages include a specific reference to time: The very first angel proclaims the arrival of God’s hour of judgment (Revelation 14:7), which began in 1844. Those who have heard the three angels’ messages, have accepted their present truths, and have passed on to the grave to await the coming of their Savior Jesus Christ, these people, as the verse today promises, will be blessed.
What is beautiful about the three angels’ messages is that they are “the everlasting gospel” (v. 6). Thus, as the gospel, when one hears and accepts it, it follows that one then heeds Christ’s call to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
And after that individual shares the three angels’ messages with others, the process repeats itself with the next individual who hears and accepts it. In this way, when these people die and “rest from their labors, … their works follow them.” Their legacy lives on as “the everlasting gospel” is passed from ear to ear.
And Christ Himself prophesied that when “this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, … then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). The three angels’ messages are the gospel that must be preached now. Since 1844 to the present day to the time when probation closes for the human race, the whole world must know that “the hour of His judgment has come” (Revelation 14:7) and that every person has a choice between eternal life and eternal death.
Our works don’t save us. But they could lead to the salvation of others—and what better work could there be?
Lord, help me to work for You now before I rest from my labors. May my life be an influence in leading others to heaven.
