When the Journey Pauses
Scripture
> “And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.”
— Genesis 11:31 (NKJV)
“Don’t Settle in Haran”
Terah began a journey. He left Ur, one of the most advanced cities of its time, with his family—including his son Abram and daughter-in-law Sarai. His destination? Canaan—the land of promise.
But something unexpected happens:
> “They came to Haran and dwelt there.”
He stopped short. Terah settled in Haran—a halfway point. Whether it was grief over the loss of his son Haran, comfort, fear, or fatigue—we’re not told. But the journey paused. The dream delayed.
Many of us start out strong with God’s leading. We take that first step toward something greater—a calling, a ministry, a dream, or a new chapter in life. But then… life happens. Disappointment. Delay. Distraction. And before we realize it, we’ve settled in a place we were only meant to pass through.
But here’s the good news: even when others stop, God’s plan continues. Terah may have stopped in Haran, but in the next chapter, God calls Abram to go forward to Canaan. The promise still stands, and the journey picks back up.
Reflection Questions
1. Have I stopped short in a place I was only meant to pass through?
2. What has caused me to “settle” spiritually, emotionally, or purposefully?
3. How can I begin moving forward again toward God’s promise for my life?
Prayer
Lord God, thank You that Your plans don’t end where mine pause. Forgive me for the times I’ve settled when You were calling me to keep going. Stir my heart again. Renew the vision You placed in me. Help me rise up and follow You wherever You lead—even if the journey is long. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
