GROWING IN KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Scripture Focus: Proverbs 4:7; 2 Timothy 2:15; Colossians 1:9–10
While breaking free from ignorance is the starting point, growing in knowledge and understanding is the journey of a lifetime. Salvation opens the door to light, but intentional pursuit of truth and wisdom determines how far we go in the kingdom. Ignorance dies through instruction—but growth comes through discipline, desire, and diligence.
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” – Proverbs 4:7
The believer who desires to walk in dominion, maturity, and fruitfulness must become a student of truth and a seeker of wisdom.
Pursuing Wisdom
Wisdom is more than knowing what is right—it is knowing how, when, and why to apply truth. Proverbs is filled with divine encouragement to pursue wisdom with passion:
• “If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures…” (Proverbs 2:4)
• “Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee…” (Proverbs 4:6)
True wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10). It humbles us, teaches us, and aligns our actions with God’s will. Many fall into error not because they lack information, but because they lack wisdom in application.
Growing in wisdom requires:
• Asking God daily for it (James 1:5)
• Listening more than speaking
• Learning from godly counsel
• Embracing correction and reproof
Discipleship, Study, and Meditation
Growth in spiritual understanding is never accidental. It requires a structured and surrendered life—a commitment to discipleship, regular study, and intentional meditation.
➤ Discipleship
Discipleship is God’s model for growth. Jesus didn’t just preach sermons—He walked with His disciples, teaching them daily. Discipleship involves:
• Submission to spiritual authority
• Accountability in learning
• Correction with love
• Consistent practice of truth
No one grows alone. You need mentors, teachers, and communities that reinforce truth.
➤ Study
Paul instructed Timothy, “Study to show yourself approved unto God…” (2 Timothy 2:15). Bible study is spiritual labor. It involves comparing Scripture with Scripture, asking questions, using tools like concordances and commentaries, and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead.
➤ Meditation
Meditation brings depth. When we meditate on the Word, we chew it, apply it, and let it shape our thoughts.
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord… and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” (Psalm 1:2)
Cultivating Spiritual Hunger
Spiritual hunger is the fuel for all growth. Without desire, discipline becomes difficult. The more you taste truth, the more you want it. Jesus said:
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)
You cultivate hunger by:
• Praying for it (Psalm 42:1–2)
• Guarding what enters your heart (Philippians 4:8)
• Fasting and separating from worldly distractions
• Feeding consistently on sound teaching
Hunger for God’s truth will pull you out of spiritual laziness and cause you to chase after deep things in God.
