Spiritual Growth: From Milk to Meat

July 7,2025

1 Corinthians 3:2, Hebrews 5:12-14, 1 Peter 2:2

The apostle Paul's words, "I fed you with milk, not with meat" (1 Corinthians 3:2), highlight the importance of spiritual growth and development. Just as a child needs milk before moving to solid food, new believers need foundational teachings before diving into deeper truths.

A Lesson from Child Development
In many African cultures, parents introduce solid foods to their babies around the crawling stage. At first, these babies might reject milk or pap in favor of solid foods like "swallow." However, this can be a sign of immaturity. Similarly, in our spiritual journey, we need to start with the basics (milk) and progress to more substantial teachings (meat) as we grow.

Feeding on the Word
The Bible is a library of books that provides spiritual nourishment. Early New Testament Christians relied on the Old Testament and the Holy Spirit's guidance. Today, we have the privilege of accessing the written Word. To grow spiritually, we must feed on the Bible, starting with the basics and progressing to more complex truths.

Developing Spiritual Teeth
As we grow in our faith, we need to develop "spiritual teeth" to break down and digest the deeper truths of God's Word. This enables us to move from milk to meat, from foundational teachings to more advanced spiritual insights.
