UNDERSTANDING THE EXCELLENT SPIRIT
Laying the Foundation of Divine Distinction
“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him…” — Daniel 6:3
Before we can walk in the reality of the Excellent Spirit, we must first understand what it truly is. Too often, believers settle for worldly interpretations of excellence—defined by accolades, accomplishments, and applause. While these may be the fruits, they are not the root. The spirit of excellence is not merely performance; it is a posture of the heart, a divine nature at work within a person.
1. What Is the Excellent Spirit?
The phrase “an excellent spirit” is unique in Scripture. It refers to a spiritual quality—not just talent, skill, or hard work. It describes a nature refined by God, shaped by divine wisdom, and driven by a passion to reflect God’s glory in all things. The Excellent Spirit is:
• A divinely imparted grace that influences character, competence, and consistency.
• A commitment to godly standards in both private and public life.
• A reflection of God’s nature—orderly, pure, purposeful, and powerful.
In Daniel’s case, the Excellent Spirit was visible in his decision not to defile himself (Daniel 1:8), his wisdom in interpreting dreams, and his unwavering integrity amidst political opposition.
2. The Origin: God, the Author of Excellence
God Himself is the ultimate standard of excellence.
“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!” — Psalm 8:1
Excellence is not a man-made idea—it is a divine nature. Everything God does is perfect, precise, and purposeful. From creation to redemption, God reveals Himself as a God of excellence. Therefore, anyone who walks with God must reflect that nature.
3. The Difference Between Excellence and Perfectionism
Excellence is doing the best with what God has given, with a heart to honor Him.
Perfectionism, however, is performance driven and fueled by fear of failure or human approval. While excellence inspires and liberates, perfectionism enslaves. The Excellent Spirit is humble, teachable, and God-centered—not self-absorbed or driven by comparison.
4. Biblical Examples of the Excellent Spirit
• Daniel – Distinguished among rulers because of his integrity, wisdom, and godly devotion.
• Joseph – Rose from prison to palace due to his faithful stewardship and godly insight.
• Jesus Christ – The embodiment of divine excellence—sinless, powerful, compassionate, and wise.
These men didn't succeed just because of their skills; they carried a spirit that could not be ignored.
5. Why the Excellent Spirit Matters Today
In an age marked by compromise, mediocrity, and moral decay, God is raising Daniels and Josephs—men and women who will represent Him in governments, schools, businesses, churches, and homes. The Excellent Spirit is not just about climbing the ladder of success but standing as a witness of God’s glory and order in a chaotic world.
When a believer carries an excellent spirit, they:
• Stand out without striving.
• Influence without manipulation.
• Excel without pride.
• Serve with joy and purpose.
