What Is the False Doctrine of Free Grace Theology?
Free Grace Theology is the belief that salvation comes by faith alone in Jesus Christ—without requiring repentance, prayer, or any evidence of transformation. According to this view, all that is necessary for eternal life is mental belief in Jesus. Repentance is often redefined in this theology as merely “a change of mind about Christ,” not a turning away from sin. This teaching is commonly found in some independent Baptist churches, non-denominational evangelical circles, and dispensationalist groups. While not all within these groups hold to Free Grace theology, it has gained traction in some of their teachings and literature.
The Bible clearly teaches that both repentance and prayer are essential elements of the Christian life.
The Greek word for repentance used in manuscripts, metanoia, means a change of mind that leads to a change in direction—specifically, turning away from sin and toward God. This isn’t optional—it’s foundational. The Bible also teaches that prayer is vital to a Christian’s relationship with God. It is how we express dependence, gratitude, confession, and worship. Any teaching that claims you can be saved without repentance, that prayer is optional, or that belief is a one-time event without life transformation is a false and unbiblical doctrine. Such teachings distort the gospel and undermine the true message of grace, which always leads to transformation, obedience, and a true relationship with God.
