Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:3-4:- 3 Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. Here Paul is comparing the Christian life to a soldier’s life. Elsewhere, in Hebrews 12, the writer of Hebrews exhorts us that God disciplines us as His sons, so that we may share in His holiness. The Christian life is like a military training and fighting unit. Suppose a military commander had a son, who was easy on him in every way till he was 11, or 12. One day his son, fat and flabby from years of eating junkfood and being a couch potato, after seeing his dad’s achievements in the battlefield decides to join the army. Suppose he wants to be a commando. His dad, who loves him so much, will himself train him to be a commando, because he loves him so much. The fat son may have to suffer a lot of self-denial and suffering in order to avoid junkfood, eat healthy food, get up at 4 in the morning in order to run 20 miles every day and exercise, but his dad, the coach knows what he is taking him through. At the end of his training, no matter how hard it is and how long it takes, that kid will one day become a commando, the toughest breed of soldiers in the army. Do you want just to be a constable in the army of God? It is indeed a miracle if we become one. But why not aim higher? Why not aim to be a commando for Jesus Christ? God knows what He is taking you through. He has His best plans for your life. He wants you to be most effective and fit for His kingdom. He wants you to bless millions and billions of people through your life and ministry. On the final day, you will be benefited by the medals or rewards you will get. So seek God for His very best in your life. Never mind the cost. It’s worth the reward of being close to the Lord Jesus for all eternity. Let us seek to be commandos for Jesus Christ for the glory of the Father, by the power of His Holy Spirit. Amen.
