July 9th

The Second Harvest.

Significantly, two major harvests marked the agricultural year in Palestine: the harvest of wheat and the harvest of grapes.

Today’s verse describes the harvest of grapes, the wicked. This angel exits out of the same temple as the other did; that is, they both came from the heavenly sanctuary. And it makes sense that the sentence of judgment will come out from the sanctuary in heaven. After all, that’s where the judgment hall is, in the most holy place, in which is situated the throne of God, which is built atop the law of God (Exodus 25:10–22). Remember, that’s where Christ is right now, in the midst of judging us.

This angel, like Christ, also carries “a sharp sickle.” Note that both sickles are “sharp,” suggesting that the executions of judgment on the saints and the wicked are both accurate and thorough. When these sentences are doled out at the end of time, it will be entirely evident, not just to the people living on the earth but to all the universe, that God has indeed judged “just and true” (Revelation 15:3).

And that is because the wicked, just like the saints, will have fully ripened in character. Those living with the mark of the beast on the last day will have settled permanently into their choice to reject God and trample upon His law. As the parable of the wheat and tares implies, the tares look so similar to the wheat during the growing process that the angels aren’t able to tell the difference (Matthew 13:29). It is only at the time of the harvest, when both have grown to the fullest, that wickedness will be seen for what it truly is.

Both harvests are judged by the same Judge using the same law, the same criteria of judgment. But it is there that the commonalities end. Just as in the parable, it is the angels, not Christ, who “will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness” (v. 41). And the sentence of judgment is vastly different for this group of people.

Father in heaven, I submit my life to You today, that my heart may not be sealed against You at the end of time.
