BARRIERS TO WALKING IN EXCELLENCE
Breaking Free from What Hinders Divine Distinction
“You ran well; who hindered you from obeying the truth?” — Galatians 5:7
Every believer has the potential to walk in excellence, but not all do. The difference lies in the barriers—invisible chains and spiritual obstacles that hinder growth, dull spiritual sensitivity, and drain divine energy. These barriers may be subtle, cultural, emotional, or spiritual, but their goal is the same: to keep you from becoming all that God has designed you to be.
In this chapter, we uncover and confront the enemies of excellence, so you can overcome them and move forward in power and purpose.
1. Compromise – The Silent Killer of Excellence
Excellence demands consecration, but compromise invites corruption. The moment a believer begins to tolerate sin, ignore conviction, or justify mediocrity, the excellent spirit begins to fade.
“A little leaven leavens the whole lump.” — Galatians 5:9
Compromise doesn’t always start loud—it begins with small decisions:
• Cutting corners
• Excusing bad habits
• Yielding to peer pressure
• Neglecting spiritual disciplines
If Daniel had compromised in Babylon, he would have disappeared into history. Excellence survives only in the soil of purity and integrity.
2. Laziness – The Death of Diligence
“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” — Proverbs 13:4 (ESV)
Laziness is not just a physical issue; it is a spiritual cancer. An excellent spirit thrives on diligence, discipline, and responsibility. Where laziness exists, excellence cannot survive.
Laziness manifests as:
• Procrastination
• Lack of preparation
• Excuses over effort
• Minimal output despite great potential
The Excellent Spirit requires the believer to “do all things as unto the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), with zeal, energy, and excellence.
3. Fear and Intimidation – The Enemies of Bold Expression
Some believers are gifted, anointed, and even spiritually mature, but are crippled by fear—fear of failure, fear of criticism, or fear of responsibility.
“God has not given us the spirit of fear…” — 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear limits excellence by shrinking your confidence and muting your potential. The Excellent Spirit gives boldness to speak, act, and lead—even in unfamiliar or hostile environments.
4. Pride – The Corruption of Excellence
Excellence without humility becomes arrogance. Pride leads to downfall (Proverbs 16:18), and it disconnects you from grace. God resists the proud because pride takes credit for what only God has done.
The Excellent Spirit recognizes that distinction comes from above, and always points people back to God.
5. Spiritual Lukewarmness – Losing the Fire
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot… So then, because you are lukewarm… I will vomit you out of My mouth.” — Revelation 3:15–16
A lukewarm heart cannot carry an excellent spirit. Passion is the fire that fuels excellence. When the fire on the altar dies (Leviticus 6:12), so does your hunger, focus, and distinction.
Lukewarmness leads to:
• Prayerlessness
• Irregular devotion
• Casual attitude toward sin
• Decline in spiritual hunger
Excellence is born from a life ablaze for God
Reflection
• Are there areas in my life where compromise has crept in unnoticed?
• What internal or external fears are limiting my excellence?
• Have I become too passive, proud, or lukewarm in my pursuit of God’s best?
🏽 Prayer Points
1. Father, expose and uproot every hidden compromise in my heart.
2. I break free from the spirit of laziness and embrace divine diligence.
3. Lord, deliver me from every fear and intimidation that hinders my progress.
4. I humble myself before You—remove every trace of pride from my heart.
5. Holy Spirit, reignite my fire and passion to walk in spiritual excellence daily.
