"The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of his being." - Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV)
The spirit of man is not a free spirit; it has a source and purpose in God. Like a candle, it illuminates the inner parts of a person, revealing their thoughts, intentions, and heart. As 1 Corinthians 2:11 says, "For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him?" The spirit of man is vital for connecting with God, and without this connection, one cannot truly know God or themselves.
A New Spirit: A Gift from God
In Ezekiel 36:26, God promises, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." This new spirit is essential for spiritual understanding and growth. As Jesus said, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6). Being born of the Spirit is crucial for having the right perspective on life and understanding God's ways.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in teaching and guiding believers. Jesus said, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things" (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit teaches us through our inner spirit, guiding us into all truth. As Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."
Conclusion
Without a new spirit, one cannot truly know God or live a life that pleases Him. Being born again, born of God, and born of the Spirit is essential for spiritual life and understanding. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
