JULY 14

Persecuting Jesus

“These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.”
JOHN 16:3

Jesus warned the disciples that a season was approaching when the religious leaders would mistreat them—putting them out of the synagogue and persecuting them. He said, “An hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God” (John 16:2). Indeed, we see Saul—who’d later be called Paul—do that very thing. He ardently persecuted believers, wholeheartedly believing he was honoring the Lord. So Jesus put him back on track, saying, “Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (Acts 9:4).

Imagine being so caught up in serving God that you completely lose sight of who He is. It can happen to the brightest and best in the church. Jesus doesn’t question the sincerity of such actions—He recognizes that people do so because they want to show devotion to Him. However, He also identifies the root problem—they don’t actually know Him.

Getting so caught up in religion, righteous agendas, or church politics that you lose sight of God Himself is dangerous indeed. You may actually be thwarting His work—persecuting Jesus Himself by your actions. So make sure your relationship with Him is first and foremost. He will certainly direct you to what truly honors Him.

Jesus, I want to truly know You and serve You faithfully. Teach me Your ways. Amen.
