Great and Marvelous Plagues.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the world in 2020, studies have emerged on the unprecedented increase in disasters and crises around the globe. But even these tumultuous days will pale in comparison to “the seven last plagues” introduced in today’s verse. “Great and marvelous” they will be indeed.
In the previous chapter, we learned about the 144,000, the three angels’ messages, and the harvests of the redeemed and wicked. This chapter, Revelation 15, provides deeper insights regarding those events, especially concerning the fate of the wicked. Now we see that God’s wrath is these “seven last plagues” brought by “seven angels.”
The number seven indicates perfection and completeness. As shown here, it further emphasizes the ripeness of the wicked. As their cup of iniquity has reached full capacity, so, accordingly, will their judgment be doled out in full, without mercy, “complete.”
It is imperative for us to understand the gravity of this revelation. The seven last plagues are not like the seven trumpets. While both are types of judgments, the seven trumpets brought partial and localized judgments against those who persecuted God’s people through the ages of history. They were warnings that provided an opportunity for sinners to repent. “The seven last plagues,” as their very name indicates, are final.
They fall at the time of reaping, after every person alive on the earth at the time has been identified as either a wheat or a tare, after each one has made the decision of who to worship and received the respective seal or mark. In other words, the last plagues fall only after the pre-advent judgment has ended and probation has closed for the human race. Once they fall, there is no opportunity to change your mind.
At the time of the plagues, there will be two groups of people still alive upon the earth, those with God’s seal and those with the beast’s mark. These are the wheat and the tares, the harvests of the wheat and grapes. The plagues, God’s wrath, are reserved specifically for that last wicked generation, wherever they are in the world. They will not touch those sealed by God.
Merciful God, may I heed Your clear and unmistakable warnings of punishment upon the wicked and be protected under Your seal.
