YOU’RE NOT LIKE GIDEON! STOP ASKING GOD TO GIVE YOU A SIGN

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said - Judges 6:36-37

When Gideon wanted to be certain about God’s call upon his life, He prayed and asked God for a sign. He put a fleece of wool out and asked God to put dew on it, but not on the ground next to it. And God obliged him. God did exactly as Gideon asked. For many Christians, Gideon’s story is inspirational. For them, it’s an example of answered prayer. They believe it shows that you can ask God for a sign, and as He did for Gideon, God will do for you since He is no respecter of persons. What they don’t realise, however, is that Gideon was not born again, and he therefore didn’t have the Holy Spirit. God had to deal with Gideon based on his flesh and engage his senses to confirm His word to him because the new birth was not yet a reality. The Holy Ghost was not yet poured out.

In the New Testament, God does not lead us by our senses, but by His Spirit. He doesn’t have to show us signs. We don’t have to see burning bushes and staffs turning into vipers. Romans 8:16 says, ‘The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.’ In the New Testament, God bears witness with our spirits by His Spirit. The saints of the Old Testament were men and women of the senses. Their spirits were not born again. God did not dwell inside them permanently as He does with us today. It was therefore impossible for God to lead them from the inside as He can with us in the new dispensation.

We therefore don’t need to put out a fleece of wool like Gideon and ask God to give us a sign for us to believe. We don’t need any outward manifestations to know that God is with us. In the Old Testament, God had to show Himself as a pillar of fire by day and a cloud by night for Israel to know He was with them. With us today, we know that we’re God’s children by the Holy Spirit bearing witness with our spirits. We know our spirits are accurately discerning God’s truth about us because we know His word. If the word of God declares that we’re the sons of God, then the Holy Spirit testifies to that truth by bearing witness with our spirits. We don’t need a sign that God loves us. You therefore don’t need to pray for signs anymore. Just trust the Holy Spirit to guide you through your spirit. You don’t need to pray for a sign to know whether you should marry that man or woman. Or whether you should take that job or not. Or whether you should move to that city or not. All you need is to listen to the voice of your spirit. The voice of your spirit is your conscience. Romans 9:1 says, ‘I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost.’ Some people call it intuition or the sixth sense, but the scriptures call it the conscience. As you pray in other tongues, the Holy Ghost will bear witness with your spirit. He’ll reveal the truth to your spirit, and you’ll hear the voice of your spirit which is your conscience, telling you what to do. Glory to God!

CONFESSION

The Holy Spirit bears witness with my spirit and confirms God’s word in my life. I don’t live in the Old Testament. I therefore don’t need to ask God for signs to confirm His word. Glory to God!
