Christlike Treatment
“In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you.”
MATTHEW 7:12
In today’s verse, Jesus taught a principle that we might be able to quote but may also have some difficulty living out. Of course, it’s easy to love people who are kind and generous to us, but when people are belligerent, arrogant, or cruel, it’s another story. Some people believe that Christ’s command to treat all people well is unreasonable. But whatever Jesus instructs us to do, He empowers us to carry out. So we must take it seriously when He says this is our standard in every situation—not just when it’s convenient. Because everyone we encounter is someone He loves and died to save, whether they treat us well or not.
To help you when people are difficult, always remember Jesus’ example at the cross. Even as the Roman soldiers nailed His hands and feet to the rough wood, He said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). He had come to purchase forgiveness for sins, and He stayed true to His mission even when it was most painful. Today, you are His representative to carry forth the message of salvation. So treat people well, and in so doing, lead them to Him.
Jesus, help me to be as kind and loving to people as You are to me. Amen.
