Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Wow, that's an amazing statement. Well, later he goes on to talk about the armor of God that we need in order to do this.
Let's define some terms here.
Yes, we wrestle. But this isn't some high school wrestling match where you pin somebody at the count of three and it's over. This is a battle. Otherwise, we wouldn't need armor, would we? Who puts on armor to go wrestle somebody? Nobody.
We need armor for a battle, a fight, a struggle. And 2 Corinthians chap 10:3 says, "Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh." So there he says we're in a war.
And we're not fighting people; you're fighting these principalities and powers.
The word principalities means chief rulers. It's also the word we get princes from. And if you recall in 1 Corinthians chapter 2, which none of the princes of this world knew, that's the same word here, principalities. It's the same guys. It's the same ones who didn't know something that Paul talks about (the hidden wisdom which eye hath not seen). And who wouldn't have crucified the Lord had they known.
Powers are authorities. One's with authority.
Rulers of the darkness of this world is really the word rulers of the darkness. Those who rule over the world. Wait a minute. I thought God ruled over the world. Well, yes and no.
Of the darkness. The darkness is a metaphor for this present evil age. This realm of sin and evil that we currently experience. World rulers of the darkness. There really are world rulers behind the people who are ruling this world.
And then spiritual wickedness. These are the spiritual hosts, the evil spiritual beings. Wicked spirits in cahoots with the evil one.
And this high places where they are is the word epouranios which means the heavenlies. It's the same word used where we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies (Eph. 1:3). We're in the heavenlies. We're blessed in the heavenlies. And these guys are in the heavenlies. Believe it or not, they are.
And so it's not people. It's supernatural beings.
We need to be cognizant of a supernatural worldview that permeates the Bible. There are these beings that we are battling with, we are wrestling with when and we need to know that and know how to fight them.
One of the first things we need to know is what are we fighting over?
