A Heart That Gives Back
Scripture
> “And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
— Genesis 28:22 (NKJV)
“A Response of Worship”
Jacob had just encountered God in a life-changing dream at Bethel. He saw a ladder reaching to heaven, angels ascending and descending, and God Himself reaffirming the covenant made with Abraham and Isaac. When Jacob awoke, he was overwhelmed.
He didn’t just walk away in awe—he responded with action:
> “Of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
This is the first vow Jacob makes to God—and it reflects a heart that recognized everything comes from Him. It wasn't a demand or a legalistic obligation. It was a voluntary act of gratitude and worship.
This moment reminds us:
When we truly encounter God, it changes how we live, not just how we feel.
Worship is more than songs or prayers—it’s offering back to God what He’s given us.
Our giving—whether time, money, or service—is a way of saying, “Lord, You are first in my life.”
Jacob was far from perfect, but this vow marked a turning point. He was beginning to shift from being a deceiver to becoming a man of faith—and his generosity was part of that transformation.
Reflection Questions
1. How do I respond when I experience God's presence or blessings?
2. Do I see my resources as mine—or gifts from God to steward?
3. What is one way I can honor God today with what He has given me?
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for all You’ve given me—life, provision, purpose, and Your presence. Help me to live with a heart of worship and gratitude. Teach me to give back to You freely, joyfully, and faithfully. I want my life to be a pillar of praise and my giving to reflect my trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
