Princess Bright, Mayor of Barking and Dagenham ( UK ) and the youngest ever UK mayor, recently talked to Premier Christian Radio about her faith in Jesus – which she has been upfront about all her political life.
The 29-year-old, who was elected as a councillor at just 22, said in her acceptance speech in May: “This is nothing short of God’s grace. I am proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence.”
She told Premier that she had a good role model – her mother, who was a long-serving councillor and also Mayor of Hackney. But she also says that “faith played a big part” in her motivation to serve her community and in making the right decisions. She is “grateful for God’s guidance” and believes that “God will never put you in any situations… that you can’t handle” because “God always equips individuals with the right skills and right people to make vision and purpose come to life”.
At just 21, she had to choose between her job and her call into politics. She turned to God for help and found the courage to resign from her job because she believed God wanted her to be “a light in this generation”. Now, as the UK’s youngest ever mayor, it is clear that she made the right decision. Not only that, God blessed her for following his call by giving her another job, at an investment bank, just two months after being elected – “which was even better than the one I had before”.
