No More Intercession.

Did you know that most people die in a fire from inhaling deadly and hot toxic gases before they die from being burned? Firefighters teach you to drop to the floor in a house fire to escape the rising fumes. The Old Testament describes times when God’s sanctuary was so filled with His presence that no one could enter it. For instance, Scripture says, “Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting” (Exodus 40:34, 35).

And while in vision, the prophet Isaiah heard a seraphim cry out, “‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’ And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke” (Isaiah 6:3, 4). “The glory of God,” as represented by the smoke, however, is a horror to those who hate God’s character.

In today’s verse, we see something new. No one’s in the heavenly temple anymore. Over and over in Revelation, we’ve been reminded of Christ’s ministry in that sanctuary, acting as our Mediator (Hebrews 9:24; 1 Timothy 2:5; Revelation 8:3, 4), our Advocate (Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1), and Judge (John 5:22; 2 Corinthians 5:10). We “[have] boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10:19).

Once Christ leaves the most holy place, however, no one can enter the sanctuary anymore, both literally and figuratively. In other words, at this point in the judgment, no one alive on earth has an Intercessor anymore. But in a sense, the very reason Christ leaves the sanctuary is that His intercession is no longer needed. Those sealed by God will be completely restored in God’s image and have no need of an Intercessor; those marked by the beast won’t ask for one anyway.

So where is Christ? Christ leaves the sanctuary in order to descend to earth for the second phase of the final judgment.

Father in heaven, help us be safe in the arms of Jesus, resting in His love and obedience.
