Ecological Disaster.

Talk about a parallel to the plagues that fell on Egypt! In Egypt’s very first plague, God did something strikingly similar: “Thus says the LORD: ‘By this you shall know that I am the LORD. Behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and they shall be turned to blood’” (Exodus 7:17). And He did.

In the second of the last plagues, the plague of blood does not only affect the Nile; it also turns “the sea” to blood. That has global implications. In fact, it has all the makings of an ecological disaster not seen on Earth since the Flood, which was, not coincidentally, another type of judgment. There is death on a mass scale. The Bible says, “The life of the flesh is in the blood” (Leviticus 17:11). When sin gets a hold of the lifeblood, it becomes like that “of a dead man.” After death, blood quickly coagulates; it becomes sticky, then hard.

When this similar plague hit Egypt, “the fish that were in the river died, [and] the river stank” (Exodus 7:21). Imagine what it would be like if that occurred in the ocean. It wouldn’t take long for this plague to begin to affect all life on Earth. Thus, the seven last plagues affect not only people; they will break down the planet itself.

An interesting distinction exists between Egypt’s plague and this second plague. The Bible records that “the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments” (v. 22). That is, the pharaoh’s magicians were able to at least make it look as though they could turn water into blood. “By this you shall know that I am the LORD” (v. 17), said God of the plagues.

Even back then, the devil was trying to throw confusion upon the true identity of God. He was using the same methods then as he will at the end of time: fabricating counterfeits. Even more interesting, these end-time plagues will begin to reveal what the devil has so long covered up.

Dear Jesus, may I drink from the Water of life and be covered by Your blood, both of which You freely offer to us all.
