DON’T BE GRUMPY. BE GRATEFUL.
Do everything without complaining or arguing - Philippians 2:14
Once again, when we see verses like our lead scripture, we should know that they are not a suggestion. These are commandments based on the character of the Lord Jesus Christ. That means the Lord Jesus Christ did everything without complaining or arguing. As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we should follow His example and do what He did. Many Christians have a lot of work to do in the area of words. They can pray, preach, teach, prophecy, and do many other miraculous acts. However, they fail in the area of speech. They are like the Israelites who complained and argued with Moses the prophet, and Aaron in the desert.
1 Corinthians 10:10 says, ‘And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.’ God is against those who complain and grumble. That’s why He sent His angel to destroy the Israelites who couldn’t stop complaining. Not only is complaining and arguing despised by God, but complaining and arguing is despised by people. If you’ve ever been around someone who’s always whining and complaining, it’s not pleasant at all. Their continual nagging is annoying and irritating. The same goes for someone who is argumentative. Proverbs 19:13 says, ‘A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.’ Not only is a quarrelsome wife like a constant drip, all quarrelsome people are like that. A quarrelsome person is like a leaky roof or a leaky tap. They’re just as annoying as listening to water dripping without stopping. No one wants to be around them, be it at home, at work, or at play. No one wants to be around someone who is always complaining and arguing.
That’s the reason some of you are currently struggling in your relationships. If you could only listen to yourself or live with yourself for just one day, you’d understand other people’s reaction towards you. Trust me, if you complain and argue a lot, you’re very unpleasant to be around. So what must you do to change? 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, ‘in every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.’ People who complain and argue a lot tend to be ungrateful in general. God might have blessed them with a family, a job, a home, a car, and many other beautiful things. But because of one small thing out of place in their lives, they focus and obsess over it. As a result, they miss out on the glory of God in their lives. Don’t let one or two small things ruin your mood, your day, or even your life. Instead of letting the few things that aren’t going well define your life, rather focus on the good things God is doing for you. Begin to thank God for your salvation, His love for you, His grace, His mercy, His goodness. Thank Him for the gift of eternal life, the gift of righteousness, the gift of the Spirit. Thank Him for what He has blessed you with in your life currently. Don’t be grumpy, be grateful. Live a life of gratitude and thanksgiving. That way, joy will begin to manifest in your life. And soon you’ll be a bearer of good news and testimonies of the goodness of God in your life. And you’ll be a joy to be around. Glory to God!
CONFESSION
I do everything without complaining or arguing. In all things, I give thanks because that’s the will of God for me in Christ Jesus. As a result, I’m always full of joy and good news. Glory to God!
