THE MONSTRANCE - CHRISTIANIZED PAGANISM

The monstrance is an object used in Catholicism to display the Eucharist—a wafer (not bread as prescribed in the Bible) believed by Catholics to be the actual body of Christ during Eucharistic adoration.

However, from a biblical perspective, the monstrance has pagan sun worship connections and other non-biblical symbols which has become embedded in Roman Catholic tradition.

Symbol Analysis And Pagan Connections

1. Sunburst Design (Radiating Spikes):
The dominant feature of the monstrance is the circular wafer surrounded by radiating golden spikes, mimicking the sun’s rays.

Pagan Origin: This design comes from the solar disks used in ancient sun worship, especially in Babylon, Egypt (Ra), Rome (Sol Invictus), and Mithraism.

Biblical Concern: Sun worship is condemned in Scripture (e.g., Ezekiel 8:16) where men turned their backs to the temple and faced east to worship the sun.

2. The Circular Wafer Called The Host:
The central white circle, called the host, is meant to represent the body of Christ in Catholic doctrine.

Pagan Parallel: The round shape comes from the sun disk used in the worship of Baal, Ra, and other solar deities.

In pagan Egypt, Osiris and Ra were often worshipped using circular sun disks on altars this parallels the elevation of the host during Mass.

3. The Cross On Top:
The cross at the top appears biblical, but it is syncretized with sun imagery, blending Christian symbolism with pagan forms.

Interpretation: A combination of symbols—Christian cross + pagan sunburst, a fusion of truth and error. This is evidence to the christianized paganism of Catholicism spoken of in prophetic symbols (Revelation 17:4–5).

4. Two Kneeling Angels:
The figures kneeling toward the host reinforce the worship of the host, seen as the "real presence" of Christ.

Biblical Contrast: In Scripture, angels worship God, not objects. Bowing to a wafer regardless of intent is idolatry (Exodus 20:4–5).

Theological Implications (Biblical/Prophetic)

From a biblical prophetic and historic viewpoint, this object:

- Violates the Second Commandment (Exodus 20:4–5) by introducing images and objects for veneration.
- Represents a sacrifice offered repeatedly in the Mass, contrary to Hebrews 10:10–14, which teaches Christ’s sacrifice was once for all.
- It is a modern echo of sun worship, fulfilling the warnings in Ezekiel 8 and Revelation 17 about a religious system mixing truth with paganism.

Historical Context:
The monstrance developed in the 13th century, during a time when the doctrine of transubstantiation was being enforced.

Pope Leo I and others adapted elements of Mithraic worship and Roman imperial religion into church liturgy to attract pagans.

"The Roman Church has blended paganism and Christianity. In the place of the Bible, tradition is exalted. The commandments of God are made void by the precepts of men." The Great Controversy, p. 572

"The forms of sun worship became interwoven with the practices of the Church and were thus hidden under a Christian name." The Great Controversy, p. 52

Conclusion:
This monstrance while used with sincere religious intent by Catholics is a fusion of biblical and pagan elements:

It exalts an object (the host) for adoration.

It incorporates solar worship symbolism, echoing ancient Babylonian and Roman sun cults.

It exemplifies the prophesied apostasy in which the Church would "think to change times and laws" (Daniel 7:25) and substitute tradition for truth.
