What was the Light of Day 1 Creation?
Pre Messianic Rabbinic literature disagrees and also the Church Fathers disagree. The light on Day 1 was not seen as sunlight by either group. Often they call it a primordial light that emanated from GOD Himself into the World. This pure light radiating directly from GOD would have been too strong for physical creatures to endure and so the light was replaced by sunlight on Day 4.
Further we see in John 1:1-5 that the Darkness is not the absence of physical light. Instead that darkness is spiritual ignorance, hence the darkness not understanding why the light shines. The Light on the other hand is both spiritual enlightenment and True Life.
John parallels Genesis 1:1-5 with John 1:1-5 to show the Son was present at the creation and to explain the Light and the Darkness on Day 1.
