Wake up With Jesus
“The Greatest Enemy Is Not the Devil – It Is the Flesh”
Key Scripture:
Galatians 5:17 (KJV):
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other...”
Devotion Message:
Good morning, beloved.
We often rise and begin our day with spiritual warfare—rebuking the devil, casting out demons, and praying against external enemies. But one of the greatest enemies you face isn’t external—it’s internal.
It is not the devil—it is the flesh.
The devil may tempt, but it is the flesh that surrenders.
The devil can whisper, but it is the flesh that responds.
The flesh is the sinful nature in every human that resists the will of God and desires to please self.
What Are the Sins of the Flesh?
The Bible clearly lists them in Galatians 5:19–21, and we also recognize others from Scripture. These are the “works of the flesh”:
1. Adultery – Breaking the marriage covenant through sexual sin.
2. Fornication – Sexual sin outside marriage.
3. Uncleanness – Moral impurity; lustful living.
4. Lasciviousness – Uncontrolled desires; shameless behavior.
5. Idolatry – Placing anything above God.
6. Witchcraft – Involvement in occult or manipulative control.
7. Hatred – Deep resentment and hostility.
8. Variance – Disputing and argumentative spirit.
9. Emulations – Jealous rivalry or envy.
10. Wrath – Explosive anger or rage.
11. Strife – Selfish ambition and division.
12. Seditions – Rebellion or dissent.
13. Heresies – False beliefs and teachings.
14. Envyings – Wanting what others have.
15. Murders – Taking life physically or through hate (see Matthew 5:21–22).
16. Drunkenness – Intoxication and loss of self-control.
17. Revellings – Wild partying or disorderly living.
18. Pride – Exalting self above God and others; the root of many sins.
19. Gluttony – Overindulgence, especially in food; lack of self-control.
20. And such like – Any other similar sins of the flesh.
Note: Paul warns that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:21).
Reflection:
Are you blaming the devil for battles you're losing to your own desires?
Which of these sins are growing quietly inside your life?
Have you crucified the flesh, or are you still feeding it?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I confess that many times I’ve fought the devil while feeding my flesh. Today, I choose to walk in the Spirit. Cleanse me from every hidden sin. Crucify my old nature and renew me by Your Spirit. Let Your holiness be my desire, and Your will be my passion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Takeaway Quote:
“If you don’t crucify the flesh, the flesh will crucify your destiny.”
