The Righteous Judge.
Today’s verse is the answer to the silent question: How can a God of love execute such severe punishments upon His creations? But the angel assures us of who God is: God is “righteous”; God is self-existent; and God is Judge. Notice that the angel is in heaven and, as such, has a view of things that we, here on earth, don’t.
Hebrews 12:2 instructs us to “[look] unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” It describes Jesus in the sanctuary in heaven, next to God the Father on His throne. When we look to Christ in the sanctuary, we are able to see more from heaven’s perspective.
We see a God who has lived and will live forever, who literally is life—“in Him was life” (John 1:4)—voluntarily decide to take our place on the executioner’s block. Christ gave His life for ours. We are “the joy that was set before Him”; Christ’s joy was found in knowing that through Him we would be able to live with Him for all eternity. Even while knowing that some people would not choose to accept His grace, Christ still sacrificed Himself.
When God appeared to Moses in the burning bush, Moses asked His name. God responded with “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). His name basically states what today’s verse does: God exists—period. Another common form of God’s name is Yahweh, derived from four letters, YHWH, in Hebrew. Yahweh is defined as: “He brings into existence whatever exists.” In other words, Yahweh, God, is the Creator. So we see in these different ways that God brings life; He is the life-giver.
In today’s verse, the angel is telling us that our Creator God, who did His utmost to give life, judges righteously by sending destructive plagues upon a part of His creation. It can mean only one thing: Those upon whom the plagues fall will not want the life God offers.
Gracious Lord, like this onlooking angel, may I too come to know and believe that Your judgments are righteous.
