The Just Judge.
The great controversy between Christ and Satan has been, to a large degree, over the character of God. Before the entire universe, Satan accused God of not really being as kind, loving, and benevolent as He appeared. Satan’s allegation, however, was proved false at the cross, the ultimate demonstration of God’s compassion for lost people. But it is at the end of time, in the final judgment, that we see the full extent of the goodness of God’s character.
Uttered amid the third of the seven last plagues is the cry in today’s verse. No doubt the voice comes from the same altar to which the book of Revelation previously refers, the altar of incense in the Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary, the altar of the petitions of God’s people (Revelation 6:9; 8:3). The voice basically affirms the same praise as “the angel of the waters” (16:5) previously gave: that God is “true and righteous.”
Those outside the realm of our sin-ridden planet will witness God’s judgments on our planet and pronounce them fair and right. These heavenly beings have seen what we have not and which we cannot—the full history of the human race. From their perspective, the devastation upon the Earth gives total justice to both groups, the wheat and the tares. They are the ones defining God as a just Judge.
Today’s verse is furthermore an echo of David’s well-known song: “The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether” (Psalm 19:9). This psalm speaks of God’s Creatorship and God’s law, two mighty truths that, as we have learned from the three angels’ message (Revelation 14:6–12), come front and center at the end of time. Of God’s Creatorship, David says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). Of God’s law, David writes, “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul” (v. 7).
Although it may be difficult now, from our limited perspective, to see God’s justice, we can trust the Scriptures, which reveal to us His perfect character, His glory. God’s perfect judgments, based upon His perfect law, will be perfectly executed at the end of the world.
Our Righteous Lawgiver and Judge, thank You for showing us the justice of Your judgments, which satisfy both the saints and the wicked.
