MIRACLE (38) By B.B.John
Let's progress to Matthew 17: 14 - 22.
Jesus had climbed up the mountain with Peter, James and John. But down the mountain were the remaining nine disciples. While the three disciples had a glorious encounter with the glory of Christ who was transfigured before them on the mountain top, the nine had a frustrating experience with a demoniac boy who was brought for deliverance below the mountain, right before the watching eyes of the multitudes.
Reflectional wise, the two camps symbolize the two types of disciples we have: Mountaintop Disciples and Valley-deep Disciples. Where do you belong?
Back to our story: the nine disciples did everything they could to set free the lunatic but couldn't. So, when Jesus came down from the mountain, the father of the boy ran to Him and knelt down to him, pleading with Him for mercy and explainingthe failed efforts of the nine disciples:
"Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for oftentimes he falls into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him." (vs. 14 - 15)
Jesus rebuked the nine for a lack of faith and cast out the devil out of the boy.
The disciples later went to ask Jesus why they couldn't drive out the demon.
"Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?" (vs. 19)
Jesus attributed two factors to their inability to set the boy free.
The first factor is unbelief - lack of faith; mustard seed faith.
"And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to younder place and it shall remove..." (vs. 20)
The second factor is prayer and fasting.
"Howbeit, this kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting." (vs. 21)
By saying "This Kind", Jesus makes it clear to us that there are certain classes of demons we can't not overpower without living a life of prayer and fasting. Yeah, some demon-instigated battles can't just be won until we begin to live a consistent, fervent praying-fasting life. We've got to be mighty men and women in prayer.
So, the keys to becoming a Mountaintop disciples of Christ is faith, prayer and fasting. It's high time we employed these keys and reign in dominion over the demonic realms.
