Good morning everyone. Grace and peace be with you.
It is amazing the things that I am learning as I listen to the Bible. Now, before you go ‘duh’, ask yourself this… Have you ever ‘listened’ to the bible? You may have read it, maybe even several times, but have you listened to it? The nuances between what you think you know and what is spoken are remarkable.
So, I know that when I read, when I get to a part that “I know,” I tend to skim … not read. I found myself doing that while listening as well. However, something caught my attention, and it took me several minutes to process. Like an AHA moment. Also, understand that the example I give you will probably generate another ‘duh’ in your mind.
One of my excuses for skipping certain books or chapters is because of the ‘begats’. Lineage did not seem appealing to me. My thoughts have been, we all came from Adam, do we really need to know the family tree? We know that Jesus was a descendant of King David and so on. The two biggies right there. Got it. Then I got my Denozo slap.
I was in Genesis, listening as I drove a route on Saturday. The story of Joseph came on and per my norm, I started to tune out. But…then something caught my ear. Jacob (Isaac) married Rachel and had Joseph…his favorite. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers and then Rachel had Benjamin. Joseph’s little brother. Rachel died after giving birth to Benjamin. Jacob was now distraught twice over; his favorite son was lost and his beloved wife gone. Though it was in black and white for all to see, I did not put Rachel and Joseph together as important. In retrospect, it makes complete sense to me now WHY Joseph was the favorite and why Benjamin was revered by Jacob. They both came from Rachel. His one true love.
Yes, it is in plain sight. Yes, I have been told the story, read the story, even listened to the story, but it was not until Saturday that I got the story. Now I am intrigued by the different aspects of the family tree and how it all plays out. It only takes one little spark to start a fire. Now the fire for knowledge is there for me…in this area.
Just like it only took me hearing something for the first time sparked a light in me to continue listening and to learn more, it only takes a little effort to plant a seed that could potentially grow a Christian.
The reason I even started listening to the Old Testament was because I was on a route inspection and the carrier was listening to Leviticus. On my way to work that day it was funny because that book was one that I thought I would have the most difficulty with…along with Chronicles. This carrier is only in his mid-twenties and is deep in the old testament. Made me think twice about where I am in my studies. A small seed.
You do not need to preach a sermon, give a long speech or lesson, you need only to see a need or opportunity to communicate Truth and Love. God will do the rest.
Be blessed today my friends.
