August 5th

Sun Burn.

Today’s verse brings us to the fourth plague. The third plague will affect the waters; the next plague will affect the sun. Both are essential for life on planet Earth. On the fourth day of Creation, God made the sun (Genesis 1:14–19), after which He then created the living creatures on the planet. Through the last plagues, God is, without a doubt, making it known that He is the Creator; He “made the world and everything in it” (Acts 17:24). We have life because of Him.

But this sun, this ball of fire that has shone without fail for six thousand years, will one day cause harm to those who so rashly scorn and reject the life God offers them. The fourth plague will be the worst sunburn ever experienced.

Interestingly, Scripture records a vision wherein a slew of abominations against the Lord are depicted. The greatest of all these abominations is a group of “about twenty-five men with their backs toward the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east, and they were worshiping the sun toward the east” (Ezekiel 8:16).

As a judgment upon these sun worshipers, God commanded, “Put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it” (9:4). Then He instructed that all those without the mark be destroyed (v. 6).

Similarly, at the end of time, much of the world will worship on the day of the Sun, more commonly known as Sunday, the counterfeit Sabbath. In fact, in ancient Rome, where worship of the false sun god Sol Invictus was commonplace, it was Roman Emperor Constantine who, on March 7, AD 321, originally mandated worship on diēs sōlis, “the day of the sun” in Latin, making Sunday the official day of rest.

As in Ezekiel’s vision, at the end of time, similar marks will be placed on the people of God versus those of the beast. Those who are without the mark, or seal, of God—those who have turned their backs on God and followed the beast’s Sunday law—will be destroyed.

My Creator, help me not to idolize created things but to turn my back upon false gods and follow the Lamb instead.
