The Character of the Wicked.

When someone gets a bad sunburn, one of the most common and simple treatments to alleviate the pain is to cool off in some cool water. But, of course, those under the fourth plague won’t have that option—since all the water will have turned to blood under the third plague.

It has been said that character is revealed, not formed, during crises. That’s just what we see in the reaction of the wicked during the seven last plagues. By the time of the fourth plague, those with the mark of the beast are outrightly blaming God. If they were atheists before, they certainly won’t be anymore. Everyone living on the earth at this point will know that God exists.

The wicked also do not repent. What a fascinating detail to add. We know that the plagues of Egypt fell on a people who still had the opportunity to repent, but that it will not be so during these seven last plagues. Probation will have already closed. These seven judgments are not a call to change but punishments for unrepentant deeds.

Yet the Bible wants to make sure that we know that even if they could repent, those with the mark of the beast won’t. This fact is yet one more assurance that God is a righteous Judge. “I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings” (Jeremiah 17:10), God declares. He will not judge anyone, the saved or the lost, incorrectly.

Today’s verse also says that the wicked don’t give God glory. This is clearly in opposition to the first angel’s message, which calls all to “give glory to Him” (Revelation 14:7). Here, we see the delineation of the two groups living at the end of time: Those with the seal of God, the 144,000, will have heeded the three angels’ message; those with the mark of the beast, tragically, will have not.

Blameless Defender, may I not be hardened to unrepentance until it is too late, but may I allow Your rebukes to mold my character into Your image.

For Further Study: Exodus 20:7; Jeremiah 13:16; Revelation 9:20, 21
KEY BIBLE TEXTS
And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. Revelation 16:9
