Throne of Darkness.

The Bible says that “the LORD’S throne is in heaven,” “in His holy temple” (Psalm 11:4). In the earthly replica of God’s temple, called the sanctuary, God’s throne is further described as the ark of the covenant, which had a lid called the mercy seat and in which was kept the Ten Commandments written on stone (Exodus 25:17–22). God’s seat of authority, the symbol of His kingship, is based upon His law and merciful salvation for the human race.

The beast’s throne, on the other hand, which we’ve learned was given to him by the dragon (Revelation 13:2), portrays the opposite. The Bible tells us that “the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light” (Proverbs 6:23). But we know that the beast’s authority is based on a counterfeit of God’s law, especially distinguishable at the end of time by its spurious Sabbath: Sunday.

The beast has discarded the light of God’s law, bringing his kingdom not only into spiritual darkness, but literal, physical darkness. Additionally, in the beast’s kingdom, the fifth plague brings not mercy but suffering, “pain.”

This fifth plague is also a mirror of the ninth plague in Egypt, when there was a darkness so deep it could “even be felt” (Exodus 10:21). Scripture describes, “There was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings” (vv. 22, 23).

Similarly, the fifth plague will affect solely the region belonging to the beast, starting at his throne—that is, the papacy’s headquarters, the Vatican. Even though by the time of the fifth plague, the beast’s kingdom constitutes basically the entire world, those with the seal of God will be spared. And that is because they walk with Jesus and claim His promise: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Christ Jesus, help me to look past the glitter and grandeur of the beast to see Your true light, which never goes dark.

For Further Study: Isaiah 50:10; Zephaniah 1:14, 15; Ephesians 5:8
